This one is a little old, but still very fascinating. I've looked all over and can only find a few sources covering this. And I haven't been able to find many updates either. Japan Probes Report Two Seized With Undeclared Bonds (Update2) By Shunichi Ozasa and Makiko Kitamura June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Japan is investigating reports two of its citizens were detained in Italy after allegedly attempting to take $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds over the border into Switzerland. “Italian authorities are in the midst of the investigation, and haven’t yet confirmed the details, including whether they are Japanese citizens or not,” Takeshi Akamatsu, a…

....that were heart broken over Israelis killing turks in international waters were totally silent on Lebanese killing Israelis on the Israeli side of the border? Personally I don't care who kills who but I do like to point out hypocrisy and bias. Here's a backgrounder for you (not my words but I back them): Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Aug. 3 that his organization will “not stand silent” on the border clash between Lebanese and Israeli troops that resulted in the deaths of three Lebanese soldiers earlier in the day. In a line reminiscent of many Iranian speeches, Nasrallah said “the Israeli hand that …

Thread for sharing and discussing movies and documentaries of "crossfire caliber". (don't share the actual files, just drop info about a quality production and/or want to discuss) I think it's ok to get "derailed" to certain subjects if neccessary To start this, I just saw the film Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex yesterday. It's a 2008 German film about the RAF, the West-German leftist terrorist group. I think the movie is a quality production and the subject is higly controversial. The early parts of the film show quite impressively what lead to the radicalization of the group, in this certain european post-war setting often ignored in US political discussion. …

So my wife and I are trying to buy a house, and somehow acquired an agent we didnt want. Long story short, this agent is somewhat of a family friend and is roughly 120 years old. I had called her to get references for lenders and such, and I believe that she just assumed that she would be our agent. Now we have 2 other agents that we wanted to work with, but somehow said older agent slipped in. How would you guys go about telling a Realtor that you no longer want to work with them? I dont want to just come out and say that we want to go in another direction because she is a family friend and dont want to hurt her feelings and because she is a sweet old lady, however…

Said this in a convo elsewhere in regards to the Israeli action boarding the Turkish flotilla and figured it would be worth kicking off the discussion here with. This is Turkey fucking with Israel. Turkey is moving to become the new Middle Eastern pole and they are doing that by attacking Israel. Look at Erdogan's lashing out at Peres over Cast Shield for the real start of it all. There were provocateurs on the vessels, soon you will see footage of soldiers fast roping down on to the boats and being immediately set upon with iron bars. The shooting didn't start until they were given no choice but to defend themselves. Israel was placed in a posi…

From the LA Times: U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker said Proposition 8, passed by voters in November 2008, violated the federal constitutional rights of gays and lesbians to marry the partners of their choice. His ruling is expected to be appealed to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and then up to the U.S. Supreme Court. [updated at 1:54 p.m.: "Plaintiffs challenge Proposition 8 under the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment," the judge wrote. "Each challenge is independently meritorious, as Proposition 8 both unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry and creates an irrationa…

http://alfranken.com/index.php/splash/netneutrality_uptake The Google-Verizon "framework" was written so as not to apply to wireless Internet services. If you use wi-fi or access the Internet on your phone, this is a serious problem. Their framework could even allow for corporations to pay for premium access to the "wireline" Internet. This framework doesn't protect net neutrality -- it undermines it. We can't let corporations write the rules they're supposed to be following. Corporations are responsible only to their shareholders, and they will always act to maximize profits. The government -- which is responsible to the public -- has to write tough …

I consider Crossfire a place for specifically the TLDR threads, so here's another one. Recently I read Matt Ridley's Nature via Nurture and thought it was so thought provoking that I hilighted all the quotables and shortened it down to something still-TLDR, but at the same time browsable and enjoyable. The nature-nurture debate is one of the most heated and exciting minefields of all academic discourse. In the tradition wanting to contribute consilient (Wilson 1998) or vertically/conceptually integrated (Barkow 1989; Cosmides, Tooby, and Barkow 1992) approaches to link scientific results from different fields, Matt Ridley has presented Nature via Nurture: Genes, Expe…

If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW. The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka Hadley CRU) and released 61 megabites of confidential files onto the internet. (Hat tip: Watts Up With That) When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be “the greates…

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100809-715911.html By Scott Morrison and Roger Cheng Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Google Inc. (GOOG) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) on Monday called on legislators to enact laws preventing carriers from blocking websites or selectively delaying access to content common on the Internet today, while leaving the door open for private "specialized networks" down the line. The proposal by the two companies, in the form of a suggested legislative framework, also said regulators should have authority to stop offenders by imposing penalties of a maximum $2 million on "bad actors." Wal-Mart to stop harassing help The United Food and Commercial Workers union stated that the decision conveyed the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart that it could not transgress workers' fundamental rights without facing the music. The company earlier this month aired its idea to close the Jonquiere, Quebec, store this spring but Wednesday the province's labor minister appointed a conciliator to preside over negotiations for a first contract at the outlet. The store was the first Wal-Mart outlet in North America where employees won union certification. The United Food and Commercial Workers union is trying to organize workers at more than a doz…

Friday’s shooting Blair said the 10 a.m. shooting at the Stockwell station was “directly linked” to the investigation. The station is just one stop away from the Oval subway station, site of one of Thursday’s four failed attacks. The man jumped a turnstile and darted on a train car. Witnesses offered conflicting versions, although they said the man showed no sign of being armed. “I’ve seen these police officers shouting, ’Get down, get down,’ and I’ve seen this guy who appears to have a bomb belt and wires coming out,” witness Anthony Larkin told the British Broadcasting Corp. Another passenger, Mark Whitby, said the man “looked like a Pakistani, …

http://blogs.alternet.org/oleoleolson/2010/08/05/massive-censorship-of-digg-uncovered/ I found this article interesting, mostly due to this paragraph: I'm very aware of the bury brigades, these guys aren't the only ones doing this. There was a pro-Israel bury brigade uncovered as well that was also operating on digg.com and various other social networks. The issue I take with this article, and the individuals involved in these sort of censorship groups are the stances they are taking on issues, which deeply concerns me because these stances are widely accepted by a major percentage of U.S citizens. These are also the stances that are loosely associated w…

Signs of distress 5000-3000 B.C. It was getting crowded. Think of that. People used to imagine that history is inevitable cyclical, but what I'm describing here has never happened before. In all of three million years, humans have never been crowded anywhere. But now the people of a single culture - our culture - are learning what it means to be crowded. It was getting crowded, and overworked, overgrazed land was becoming less and less productive. There were more people, and they were competing for dwindling resources. What happens when more people begin competing for less? That's obvious. Every schoolchild knows that. When more people start competing for less, …

Arizona is threatening to leave Los Angeles in the dark -- and its air conditioners without power -- if the city doesn't rescind its order to boycott the state over Arizona's tough new immigration law. Cities across have vowed to boycott Arizona following the immigration bill. "I feel like if you're going to boycott the candy store, you've got to leave all the candy alone," said Arizona Corporation Commissioner Gary Pierce. Arizona provides 25 percent of Los Angeles' power. "I feel like Arizona is the candy store," he added. Pierce made his challenge after the Los Angeles City Council's 13-1 vote earlier this month to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based bu…

Teen in custody for alleged rape Toledo police arrested a suspect who raped a woman in broad daylight. TPD says it happened at Royalton near Lyman Tuesday afternoon. Authorities say the 26-year-old victim was walking to the west Toledo library. The police report: "He grabbed her, put the scissors to her throat. Initially he tried to get her to engage in a sex act. She declined. He continued the attack, pushed her to the ground, physically removed her sweat pants and raped her." Several witnesses called 911. They, as well as the victim, were able to give a good description of the suspect to police. Anferney Fontenet, 15, made a full confession. The teen…

So my favorite video site got taken down by the feds for copyright infringement and it got me thinking. Radio, TV, and the Internet has killed thought. In an age where knowledge is so easily accessible and everyone has a forum to speak I find less and less people are thinking for themselves. In all honesty, I am as guilty as any other. In high school, before the internet exploded into what it is today, I might have spent hours contemplating a subject, abstract or concrete, but now I just Google it and see what others have said. Sure, entertainment can be an outlet to introduce ideas; documentaries are a good example. Instead of finding a display of facts that …
