The Beer Thread

Far from it mayn. I am an enhancement drinker.

I had to fuck my palette way the fuck up in order to truly appreciate such a fine ale as it is. Like eating saltines in between a taste testing.

After a night of cheap beer, In n Out, Tums, and heartburn I can now truly dig the sixers of Lagu chilled in my fridge. Hairy eyeball, Censored, 09 Correction, and of course Shutdown.

In fact I think I'll have one with meh cheerios.

Nothing better.

This was interesting but for some reason I was hoping for a little bite and instead it was just slightly sweet.

but it was good enough to try and it has made me interested enough to try the other beers they offer.

Great Lakes Grassroots ale.

I had this at that convention. I got it again recently. it doesnt taste like anything i've ever had before.

though this does not sound appealing the only thing i can compare the smell/taste to is

freshly cut grass. i love it. if you can find a 6 of this grab it.

also before i forget, with the economy the way it is let me help you with beer prices.

ok first off only shop at small liquor stores that carry this sort of stuff.

though whole foods has a pretty good selection and price they are not going to give two shits about you.

however if you can find a small liquor store shop there instead. get to know the owner.

micro brews are not marked up that much so the owner really isnt making that much off of them.

but if you buy it by the case you should be able to get atleast $5 off.

now figure that the sixer you are buying costs $8.99(without tax) you are paying $1.50 a beer

so i bought a case which would have cost me $36 i got it for $30 which drops the per beer price to $1.25 a beer

now for the real savings, ask what kind of deal he can give you. all liquor store owners have stuff that they can't seem to get rid of

or if there are crappy beers that you enjoy see how much you can get them for.

bigger the beer company (miller lite, corona etc) the more he can drop the price.

he was offering me miller or corona at around .50 a beer (no thanks).

instead i got a case of some german beer for $1.00 a beer ($24)

word up morton,

a prefabricated keggerator is sold at stores like home depot for just 400 or so bucks

sanyo-kegerator.jpg

you also gotta factor in electricity costs of running a second fridge tho..

a keg of good beer will probably run you about 120-150

but that comes out to about 81 cents a beer, and it keeps it fresh for 4 months or so.

but then you have the problem of only drinking that beer for a good while,

i like to switch up my six packs all the time.

heres what i copped last night:

But if you get a keg of something that never gets old then you're okay. For instance a solid lager or ale which ever you prefer. Easy to drink and could be an every day kind of thing, or the beer you drink before the bar. Or you also have the option of buying pony kegs or soda kegs which will hold far less and are cheaper obviously.

Buying a kegerator and then justifying it as a way to "cut costs" is the excuse that you tell your wife why you have to spend 300-400 dollars up front for beer.

in reality it just means that you will drink more pints of beer every night than you regularly would have because you have a half barrel sitting in your living room.

then you end up blowing through a few kegs way faster than you should and one day when you find your self without any beer or a keg you decide to stop spending 70-150 bucks on a keg and just buy a case or a few bottles , then your kegerator sits empty, and empty, and empty. Then one day its on craigslist for maybe half of what you bought it for and the whole process repeats with some other thirsty young buck.

Only ammendment I have is about Whole Foods. For full disclosure, yes I work there. However, if you want to find out about case specials, etc. ask to speak to the Beer Specialist. They will be the one's who actually buy the beer, manage the stock and typically genuinely enjoy good beer. The one I work with is awesome, he will stock particular cases in back so we can go and get a six pack everyonce in a while rather than actually stock it on the shelves.

So basically just go in, find someone in specialty (Beer, Cheese, Wine) and ask to speak to the beer specialist. If you have something specific in mind, see if they carry it. If not, just start a general conversation with em about what they like, what they suggest, and what their case discounts are like.

It's a nice way to develop a good relationship with someone who can provide you good beer cheaper than most places who stock it.

I'm pretty sure there is a case discount.

Or, the cases are gonna be cheaper than most places because of the lowered price.

The buyer and I got really sad the other week because there was a beer we both wanted, got it in and it was two dollars cheaper than a competing beer store in SF. We both rejoiced in that fact, but two days later the beer's price jumped a dollar and a half. Someone at regional figured out what the beer was worth, and that sucked.

But the two tall boys of PBR for 3 dollars has been rockin my socks off.
