pawnshopping

been considering doing a little ebaying in my spare time

and heard pawn shops are a good place to find goods to sell.

anyone ever find some knock down drag out deals on musical instruments,

electronics, etc?

will the people behind the counter dicker with you?

is it a mistake to buy corded items (electronics)?

what about firearms? obviously i can't ebay them, but have you ever made out really well buying a firearm?

We don't really have any pawn shops near me. There's some in areas that I'd get shot in so forget that. I'm flea market king. I never find anything of retail value for the most part just great old cassettes and junk. Guess I offered up no real help on the matter.

On another note though, I have made a killing on ebay before selling my own stuff...so go for it!

go to garage sales. thats where the real action is. pawn shops will probably already know whats worth a lot and whats crap. at garage sales just talk with the people and they give stuff away for nothin.

you can occasionally find instruments, but its mainly acoustic guitars, harmonicas, things like that. and you can get them for a few bucks. dont know about resale value.

with electrical stuff, obviously ask to test it first.

i know you can make some money on old appliances (toasters etc), especially if it was a rare or weird brand.

another thing to look for in appliances is design. there were a lot of unusual product designs back in the day (1960s etc), and some of them are becoming collectible. i think this would be a good bet to make money on. research this stuff on the net, im sure its out there.

hope that helps.

yeah, i was thinking about garage sales and flea markets, too. (thanks bojangles)

if a mod sees this, please add "flea markets" to the title.

what made me think about pawn shops was this one account i read of a guy

buying a $250 guitar peddle for $15 and reselling it on ebay for $150.

that is a huge profit.

and yes, pawn shops are creepy. i went in one last week (first time in years)

and browsed some video cameras and some digi cams. the prices they wanted

were way out of line.

saw this one cybershot i was kinda interested in. i think it was 4 megapixels

and the camera had some surface scratches, they wanted $150...

and non one would pay any attention to me...i don't look like a common

pawn shop customer or a crackhead (i guess)

i miss the flea market. my girl hates it, so i don't go as much as i'd like to.

the messicans have taken over one close to where i live. seriously.

they have a ton of good messican food stands, though.

the other one is about 30 miles away and a lot bigger.

Burnt my fingers, man.

I beg your pardon.

Man, that watch is so hot, it's smokin'.

Hot? Do you mean to imply, stolen?

I'll give you 50 bucks for it.

50 bucks!

No, no, no. This is a Rochefoucauld, the

thinnest water-resistant watch in the world.

Singularly unique, sculptured in design,

hand-crafted in Switzerland

and water-resistant to three atmospheres.

This is the sports watch of the 80's.

Six thousand, nine hundred and fifty five dollars retail.

Got a receipt?

Look, it tells time simultaneously

in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London,

Paris, Rome and Gstaad.

In Philadelphia it's worth 50 bucks.

Just give me the money.

How much for the gun?

We has nice pawnshops around my part. Seriously, they're well kept, bright and organized.

I take my lil brother and sister there for video games and such. But most of their electronics are overpriced.

Im probably going to jump in on the ebay game pretty soon, so if you see assless chaps and graffiti world in the same auction. Holla at ya boy

You really need to know the man behind the counter to get a good deal at most pawn shops. I had a boy that worked at one a few years back and I bought everything from digital cameras, dirt bikes, plasma cutters, tool boxes, etc.. all for way below retail...

One of my good friends works in one.

I can pickup shit thru him easily, so I don't mind them.

Funniest story I ever heard was of Chemical Stuey, an old drunk who used ot come into my bottlo.

Ill find the story from my myspace blog, and post it later

It was funny, but he has been banned from hocking shit now.
