Not an entire real day in pies, only about 4 or 5 hours after work hours on Thursday and mad artistic Yo.

Great find and shots of these ballast cars. They're most likely not abandoned because they were restenciled for Northwestern Pacific which operated in that area of Northern California. If they looked like they were sitting there for a year or two, then they are in storage but not slated for scrap.
