Poll: What do you think of this practice?

Harmless fun for country children?

Teaching the wrong message; that animals are things?

The SPCA plans to talk to a rural Manawatu school after receiving complaints about a possum throwing contest.

Last week, the Fairfax Media-owned Manawatu Standard ran pictures of the children at Colyton School participating in the contest, in which pupils grabbed possum carcasses by the tail and lobbed them through the air to see how far they could toss them.

In Australia, the animal is a protected species but in New Zealand it is a pest.

Drunk jailed for microwaving lover's hamster after row

September 23, 2010 - 6:13AM

A British court has sentenced a man to nine weeks in prison after he killed his favourite pet hamster by cooking it in a microwave during a drunken row with his girlfriend.

Unemployed Anthony Parker, 29, was also banned from keeping any animals for five years after he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the rodent resulting in its death.

Parker told police after his arrest in Hartlepool in northeastern England: "I didn't mean to kill her. She was the best hamster I ever had. She was called Suzie."

Prosecutors said the Syrian hamster died "in agony". Its lips were burned and its eyes had turned opaque.

"It will have been horrific for that poor little hamster. I think justice has been served," said Lucy Hoehne, who investigated the case for the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to animals.

The case comes two days after a British woman who sparked an internet hate campaign after she was caught on camera dumping a cat into a rubbish bin was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.
