Yes, if you save an animated .gif to camera roll, then access /view it there , it's not playing there and has seemingly turned into a still image. Tap on it (hold), then 'copy', and paste it somewhere else (into iFiles for example), then it has somehow changed into a .png - but if you view the same saved .gif in camera roll, and choose 'send via email', you'll see it's still the animated .gif it used to be, it is actually playing in your email draft.
