Alright, so i've never had a cell phone before. Ya, i know, crazy talk. Anywho, i've been in the market for the last month+ for a decent plan and found an ad on craigslist of someone wanting to transfer their line.

Now, this might sound super noobish, but i honestly know dick about cell phone plans/anything regarding contractual business. As i understand it, this helps the other person in that they save a cancellation fee, and helps me by saving me an activation fee, i get a free phone, and the plan in question is 10 dollars cheaper then if i got the same plan myself atm.

I'm supposed to call the person today and get it done with. I'm just wondering, how does the process of transferring a plan/line go? I just see myself calling and the dude being like "Ok, i have T-Mobile on the other line, now i just need your name, address, credit card number...".

Thanks ya'll.

1.too much could go wrong.

2. If you go to get your phone activated at a bestbuy with at&t,verizon,sprint...etc one of those companies will waive the activation fee.

3.AND depending on what phone you go with you can get it for free.

see I dont even fuck with any contracts stuff

I have a pay as you go phone, I put £20 on it every month that covers that calls and I get 500 free texts if I top up by £20.

I don't use my phone much and when I have had a contract in the past I have just ran up mad bills

Sounds too good to be true=probably too good to be true.

If you break or lose the phone then you're not out much, but unless the guy transfers control (passwords, etc.) of the plan to you then it's a hassle.

He could up and cancel your service on you too.

Just go with a prepaid and get a grip of airtime when you buy it. Register it to your dead uncle when you get it if you plan to be talking about shady business on it.

The dude in the craigslist ad is really just trying to avoid a cancellation fee which is usually about $200. So he's looking for someone to take the line. Either way tmobile is getting paid, so they don't care who they get their money from.

Its called a transfer of responsibility. I did this with my girlfriends line recently. She called tmobile gave her info then they asked to speak to me. The representative asked if I agreed to take the line, yes. Asked for full name, social and address.

That was about it. Its very simple but I can see why someone would be cautious to go thru the process.

Tmobile is probably the simplest major cell company. Plus they're pushovers, if you bitch in a nice way they generally have something that'll suite your needs. Bill problems, adding lines, new phones or whatever. They have great customer service.

I highly suggest NEVER going to an "exculsive" or "authorized" dealer, for example those stands in the mall or places that deal with multiple cell carriers.

Hope I've helped.

There's no "password" to transfer and as soon as it goes thru (which is immediately) the guy has no access whatsoever to your service in any way.

He will get the last bill and any outstanding balances he owes.

There's entire sites dedicated to transferring plans/finding someone with a few months left in their plan:

http://www.cellswapper.com/

http://www.celltradeusa.com/

Surely the process isn't that foreign to everyone?

no, its legit. People do this, frequently. I say go for it, its the same basically as taking over a lease on a car, you're just changing the name on it. Cell phone companies are cool with it cuz they are getting paid

All in all, it seems like a bad idea. I've never done it. I just went with prepaids when I wasn't getting a free phone for work.

BTW- don't go with Sprint. They're the worst.

Cingular has a decent pay as you go plan.
