40,000+ people die on the roads every year! millions more are injured. car culture is a death cult

100% which is why imo being okay with acceptable losses aka hit kids/pedestrians/cyclists in a fully AV world is unacceptable.   If the point is to make personal transport safe as possible it should be perfect.

that said, Elon’s whole reason for wanting to develop autopilot in EVs is because he can’t handle the idea of sharing a train car with a poor.

Will get shit range if towing anything.  They might as well just call it the Ford Home Depot Runner instead of an F-150 because that's all I think an electric truck is good for.  At least this one won't look gayer than aids like that tesla truck.

There's a reason there aren't any 18 wheelers using batteries to tow shit across the land mass.

certainly. but a tiny minority of truck drivers even use their bed with any regularity — they should absolutely be driving an ev

EV hauled freight is coming.

Kinda… but not really for long distances.

“Still, some activity around battery-electric freight trains has begun to stir. Wabtec’s new battery-electric locomotive, for example, will make its first runs on a 139-mile route from the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the town of Conneaut, Ohio, chaperoned by the newest iteration of the company’s fuel efficient diesel locomotives.

The diesel-electric combo may disappoint electrification fans, but Wabtec still expects an overall emissions cut of 30%, which is no small potatoes.

Fuel cells offer another route to electrification. Sierra Northern Railroad in California, for example, recently won a grant to build a fuel cell electric locomotive for freight applications. It will be confined to work in a switching yard”

Don't think battery tech is ready for freight trains, or long haul trucking yet. Battery weight for electric vehicles is usually > 1/4 the total weight of the vehicle before it starts making sense even for short ranges. You'd need a super high (multi million dollar) battery cars, to freight car ratio to approach feasibly operating for an 8 hour period. It would be more cost effective to just run high voltage overhead wire, or third rails. You gotta think, battery tech barely makes sense (if that) for a light passenger vehicles. Hauling freight wouldn't make sense until EV's like Teslas start approaching the1000 mile range. Even then, I still only see it making sense shorter for local routes, where the equipment can afford the downtime required to recharge itself regularly.

do you think trash trucks might be viable? @Mercer

No, not even close to viable at this point. Possible though depending on the company/municipality operating them, their willingness to waste money, and to adjust their entire collection system to accommodate electric.

Maintaining 75mph on a highway in a small efficient passenger EV requires a 20-40 minute recharge every 3-4 hours of driving. Electric passenger busses have even less range to recharge time. I'm just assuming since garbage trucks are much heavier, less efficient, and are starting/stopping while powering hydraulics, etc.

My guess is they would most likely only be able to maintain a 2 hour shift at normal workloads, then require a long charge before being able to go back out. Even more of a waste considering you're paying the collectors operating it the entire time. If that's up for a vote in your area and you hate seeing money wasted vote no. Garbage collection (believe it or not) is super duty very important, especially in areas that snow since those trucks have to clear the roads to keep all us dumb asses alive. If sanitation, and the police are both threatening to strike, trust me, give them sanitation workers a raise if you know whats good for you.

Saw this today.

•"The technology we co-developed creates a synchronized relationship between the trailer and the tow vehicle, enabling the trailer to move in harmony with the tow vehicle, reducing the pulling effect required from the tow vehicle. This, in turn, dramatically improves the possible range of the combination. In essence, we've turned the trailer into an electric vehicle. The technology is game-changing for our industry and others."

•there’s enough battery power to survive comfortably without hookups for up to two weeks.

•The eStream can be charged at most EV charging stations, and there's a separate 30A input for RV campground hookups.

•A 900-watt solar power system consisting of five Merlin 180-watt semi-flexible panels mounted on the roof of the eStream also helps with power production.

•Move mode, and it allows the eStream to remotely park itself independently of a tow vehicle or trailer mover. Using its driving wheels and ultrasonic sensors to protect the trailer's precious body panels, the eStream can be guided into a parking spot precisely

•The camper can also export its electrons, acting as a backup generator for a home or a charger for a separate electric vehicle.
(!!!!)

^ this last bullet point seems huge to me. You can charge your car with this thing parked in the driveway. Or hook it up to the AC on your house to keep electricity bills down… super dope!

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-recalls-nearly-579000-us-vehicles-over-pedestrian-warning-risk-sounds-2022-02-10/

WASHINGTON, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Electric car maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is recalling 578,607 vehicles in the United States because pedestrians may not be able to hear a required warning sound of an approaching car due to loud music or other sounds played by its "Boombox" feature, a U.S. regulator said on Thursday.

Tesla has issued 10 U.S. recalls over the last four months, including four in the last two weeks. The Texas-based company has come under increasing scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Tesla said it was not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the vehicle alert issue that spurred the latest recall.

Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update that will disable the Boombox functionality when the vehicle is in Drive, Neutral and Reverse modes. Many of Tesla's recent recalls have been to address software issues.

10 recalls in four months - are they all software updates?

Hah. @KILZ FILLZ I was trying to understand what the problem was with the boom box. Like if you hear mad loud fart noises screaming up on you, look up from your phone for a god damn second.

edit

oooor it would be super dope if musk entered into a contract with apple where people’s phones gradually vibrate harder and harder the closer a Tesla got to them until the moment the Tesla passes them and then their IPhone just starts making all types of fart noises. Maybe for the duration of the Tesla being 50 ft from them in any direction.

Im pretty excited for this one. Although it doesn’t specify in this article, I read somewhere else that this truck is going to come with a very small combustion engine that will fire off and charge the battery if you run out of juice.

Ive always liked rams aesthetically aside from a few years, but I think all vehicles have those couple of years. The one thing I don’t like about dodge trucks recently is they don’t have a cab option between regular cab and their quad cab.

Do you mean like the models Ford made that were a regular cab with enough space to store a few items and hang some clothes but not sit?

The next 5 years are going to get so crazy in the car/truck market.
