If you happened to live in Chicago and watch Dr Who on the evening of November 22, 1987, you'd had one hell of a surprise. The fans of Dr Who were watching their loved show when suddenly, around 11.15 PM, the TV started to flicker and twitch, and instead of the show, this was on their screen:

headroom.jpg

This was not the only intrusion of the night. The first occurrence of the signal intrusion took place during WGN-TV (channel 9)'s live telecast of its prime time newscast, The Nine O'Clock News, bearing the same Max Headroom imposter. Then the intrusion which had no audio except the buzzing noise, lasted for about half a minute before the engineer in the studio switched the modulation to another transmitter.

In the case of Dr Who, some sources say there were no technicians that late in the station to switch the modulation, other sources claim that engineers were present, but unable to take corrective measures.

What makes this incident so special is that broadcast signal intrusions are extremely rare and require expensive equipment and skilled electronic engineers to carry them out. The Max Headroom is the most famous one but there are handful of others, such as intrusion on February 1, 2009, when Comcast customers in Tucson, Arizona, had Super Bowl XLIII interrupted for 30 seconds by an adult channel. This was the first verified intrusion occurence in the US since the Max Headroom incident.

Today, 22 years later, the hijacker still remains at large.
