The citizens of China still suffer today as a result, read some basic history if you doubt this. Have they advanced themselves? Yes, but you can argue that that started as an act of desperation to save themselves after suffering much damage from....their own egocentrism. The US has around 6000+ intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. China has around 40. The US has a massive fleet of bombers capable of flying from many US bases in the world (the bases in southern Japan come to mind pretty quick and there's also Hawaii) with the aid of refuelers if need be that can drop nuclear bombs on China. China has no air bases outside of China nor does it have air refuelers...., let alond aircraft capable of flying anywhere close enough to CONUS to launch a cruise missile. The US has around 12 aircraft carrier FLEETS (not just the one boat but whole fleets) that can deploy to any theatre in the world (just as they did in 1996 when China blockaded Taiwan) usually in a matter of days as many of them are already forward based...., one in Japan now. China has no operational aircraft carriers. I could go on an on for hours here explaining how easily the US would disable and crush China in a matter of days. Just because I lived there before and enjoyed it. It's certainly not perfect and I had gripes about the place but I like the atmosphere. Loved riding the trains around Tokyo and exploring. Graffiti was growing too so there were lots of spots. And shit ran. Incredibly safe and you never heard of drive-bys or armed robberies. A little on the cold side though. Add Guam too where the heavy bombers are (B-52s & B-2s). Not to mention Korea. If China were to attack US bases in Japan & South Korea, that would probably draw those two countries in the war against China. That said, I'd say the US wouldn't want a fight with China, because the US likes to pick easy battles it seems. Not since WW2 has the US went at it with a true power. The US could win against China because of reasons you listed but it wouldn't be easy. And a full-on occupation would be a mistake given their size in area & population.
