I think I mentioned before a lot of the Mercedes vans are former police / ambulance / etc. wagons - there were just a lot of them here in Berlin (or in Germany in general I guess) - it's a lot of these, basically:

They're easy to convert, and they're set up really simple / are reliable / if something brakes you can probably fix it yourself.

And they're affordable.

 

And the VW's I think were just really popular as a familiy vacation kinda van, they were more small / more swift to drive, and more aimed at leasure (although these types were also used as work vehicles). 

More complicated and already a bit more "techie" compared to the Merces but saught after as well.

My homegirls dude wants to buy a adventure time van to have as a permanent home and I think he’s dumb. Unless you have some real legit form of traveling work and a place to park the fucking thing it doesn’t make any sense. Pretty sure the only place you’re allowed to pull up like that for free and clear of parking enforcement is Walmart no?
