Couch Surfing

So- before I go on to grad school and leave sweet home chicago for a minimum of 5 years, I want to go to Europe.

The thing is, I'm pretty short on $$. So it was more of a dream until I heard of this program where you can stay with people in Europe for free. In their apartments and all.

It sounds kinda sketchy, but many of the people on this site are vouched for by other travellers. And obviously I am going to try to stay with girls instead of guys by all means. If I use this system, I can potentially travel all throughout Europe for 2 months. That is, if I really have the courage. I will be going on my own since none of my friends really like to travel or since they're just broke.

So what I really want to know is if any of you guys have done this kind of thing before. Any not so obvious advice? I'm thinking of doing this next summer so I have time to ponder my decisions.

Here is a couple of sausage links:

o my.

That's quite silly. Made me laugh though. No, that will not be happening to me. Some of the guys on that site look like they could be that way though.

Too bad you're not in Europe, ABC. I have relatives somewhere in Australia. I'll go visit them one day and go see you in the process. We'll play chess.

ha-ha...yup...thats the site.

cinched...you can't find anyone to go with you? sell them on the life experience tip...ie...they can't afford to NOT go.

no clue on the staying with people thing...but it does sound a little sketchy. one of my friends did 5 months in Europe. He went the camping and hostel route. Go in the off season and it'll be even cheaper.

I might be able to hook you up with places to stay in Barcelona, Frieburg, Munich, Milan, Moscow and Kiev...but I'm not sure...they're fairly new contacts exept for Barcelona and Munich.

I did about a month in Europe, mostly just staying in hostels... you can find some really cheap ones that aren't bad if you look around. I also wound up crashing with some people that I met while I was over there, but i'm neither a girl or all that attractive. Hence, no HarveyWellbanged.UK site. It can be a little sketchy, but if you are good at reading people and know how to take care of yourself (i.e., kick a dude in the blocks and run when it becomes necessary) you should be okay.

how about travelling somewhere that doens't have the highest exchange rate?

I seriously suggest Thailand, or anywhere in Southeast Asia for that matter. I travelled around Thailand this summer for 2+ months, and it cost me just over $3500 Canadian - not bad when you consider that the flights alone cost $2500. Backpaking on a budget is the only way to really see a country / countries anyways.

Just a thought.

I've been putting some serious consideration into backpacking Europe for some time now. I hear I can do it for about $3000, and that's drinking a beer or two everyday. My plane ticket will be dirt cheap round trip, as my sister works for an airline and I get tickets off 80% worldwide.

Some couches to hit would be nice from time to time. I'm sure the hostels get kinda tiresome.
