He is a just for TV nurga. Maybe he is still alive "It is believed that Merle stole the van Rick, Glenn, T-Dog and Daryl used to return to Atlanta, and fled the city in it." I hope he does not reappear (except in spiritual form). Not really feeling random characters that were not in the OG story. I'll say it again, it's a zombie show; acting, plots and tempo standards are allowed to be lowered for such occasions. the zombies still looking gruesome as ever, especially the water bloated one that split last episode.
