Lewis and Clark
really diggin middle yellow and white fades look like crystals and bright yellow/red thins on top really popit also the texture on the black half of the top one i been playin w paint, going to keep layering it i think it needs more white, but im a b&w guy myself.. also-fuzzy from scanner + another start
ShortFuse
awesome as always poesia. I love the sketched look in the first one, looks like a mock charcoal. What caught my eye in the third one was that chipped look, kind like you lifted tape off semi dry paint. Looks great. Oh and the clean straight lines as well. CLEMENZA
Is it finished? I'd like to see a couple more layers. Maybe some more shades of the colors you got going + another color? Just my opinion, looks like a good start.
complex
Thanks for the crit. It is finished though. I was running this deal where if people buy me a canvas than ill paint it for free. So this is one of them and I didn't really have time to develop it. Also, when I do paintings of this style I often do the whole thing in one sitting. I could put more layers on it but than the new layers wouldn't blend smoothly into whats already the original layer is already dry. How can I add more layers and make it not seem to separated? Bojangles
How can I add more layers and make it not seem to separated? Use the same colors you already used. (Or even better, find some complimentary colors.) Build on top of what you have with new shapes. Definitely looks like it needs more to it in my opinion. complex
General question: When painting abstracts, how do you determine direction
Bojangles
For me, I start with a core shape and just sort of envision an animated sort of imaginary path on the canvas. (Alcohol helps that part along nicely.) I just keep building off of it. Do one set of lines/layers then walk away for awhile or even a day or so and come back and keep building. I used to try and knock it all out in one sitting and I found my work got stale real fast. Do a little, walk away. come back later in a different state of mind and do more. Create some trademark shapes to use in your arsenal.
complex
Good advice Bo, I really need to stop doing the all in one sitting technique
Picky P.
good advice on the beverages, too. i like a couple frosty beers while i'm creating fa sho.
CLEMENZA
Definitely good advice from bo, abstracts to me are all about finding what i like as i paint which usually takes some time and multiple layers. Alcohol will loosen you up when making decisions in direction, i like to start out my paintings with some whiskey and maybe finish them with some weed

earl broclo ESQ
I really like the bottom of the top one. Both are nice, but that's what sticks out when I look at them.
