BUNBUNBIGGY
Throw another thumbs up for the Departed, I thought it was great. I'd even consider putting it over Goodfellas in terms of the perfection of his craft in this film. Amazing performances all around and it was South Boston, through and through. Hard to compare it to Goodfellas because it's about ONE mob boss rather than a whole syndicate, and it's also a totally different film. I'm still weighing on it but I'm leaning towards The Departed because there is no glorification of the mob and because it works so much more heavily on a personal level. I can relate more to the film than Goodfellas or Casino, so it makes way more of an impact on me. They're all great movies, in my opinion, but I think Departed takes the edge. And I'm not just saying that because I'm from MA. The departed was based on a chinese movie called Internal Affairs.

imported_splint2
Word to: word...i enjoyed this movie. you know of anything else similar to this in terms of plot?
fermentor666
A bunch: "1984", "Demolition Man" (heh), "Brazil", "Logan's Run", "V for Vendetta", there's so many. The story is fairly common throughout sci-fi literature and movies, sometimes it's pulled off really well, other times it comes off as stale and typical (Demolition Man being one of those times, IMO). Equilibrium was pretty awesome but it wasn't anything blazingly original, with the exception of the fight scenes.
mindvapors
Hm. It did remind me of Brave New World, but thats a book.
fermentor666
I still haven't read that but from what I know of the book it fits those lines as well. Equilibrium is a typical "totalitarian/fascist future-government that abolishes the past to keep the present in check" plotline, not that it's a bad thing or movie cause it's pretty good. imported_splint2
"1984" word...it was the 1984-esque theme that i enjoyed the most about it i think. the fight scenes were done well too. i have seen those others you listed, save "Logan's Run," i guess i will have to check that out. i realize it is an overused plot/theme, that's why i was hoping someone could point me in the direction of something similar that was done well. thanks for the suggestions homie. Bonus: One of my family members recommended this movie called Death Race 2000 It has David Carradine in it. That's enough to make it worth watching for me. I'm going to check it out, maybe y'all should too.

caL^
300 Turns out that Frank Millers amazing graphic novel 300 is coming out as a movie. I am quite happy about this. In the comic book world the most artistic artist/writer is Frank Miller. His book about the battle of Thermapolae is an amazing tale of human strength and courage and an uber-realistic depiction of ancient spartan culture and a truely breathtaking and un-cliche exposition on war, freedom and stoicism, yet it does not try to hide the inherent brutality of the Spartan lifestyle. The vivid colors of Lyn Varley and action packed and riviting pencils and inks of Miller, together with the usual mastery of the written word herein combine to show the special place that the graphic novel must hold in the literary realm. I dont know if the movie can live up but it will be fun to see if they can indeed duplicate what makes Millers work special and convey the same emotional tone in a different medium. In short, 300 is about King Leonides of Sparta, who for religious/legal-political reasons cannot bring his army out to war against the invading Persians. However, wanting to inspire all Free Greeks to come out and defend the worlds one small hope for reason and justice, goes forth with his personnal bodyguard of 300 handpicked soldiers to stop the Persians at Thermopylae, the hot gates, a mountain pass where the Persian hordes will shatter like waves against the rocks... His martyrdom inspired a nation to unite in war and drive their enemy into the sea
