I did a plunge on super bowl sunday. Irish coffees are the way to go my man. Buy a box o' joe from D&D and a liter of Jameson and you'll be good.

i ended up chugging a handful of those little rum bottles.

i figured the cold water would make me less drunk but it had the opposite effect.

but it doesnt matter because i stayed in 40 degree water for 3 minutes (dove in) and won 150 dollars in bet money. :D

Re: Bartenders •-

Do people tell you their problems?

Is it something you dislike?

Do you consider it part of the job?

Is it something that only happens in movies & tv?

I know all my regulars really well. I've gone to Yankees and Mets and Knicks games with some of them, others I've helped to move, played basketball with them, played pool at other bars etc.

I know what's going on in a lot of people's lives, they want to talk about it over a beer, and I happen to be serving that beer. I listen well, I always remember what I'm told, and I get updates on shit with plenty of feedback to give so they know I'm not just bullshittin' for tips. It's part of managing a neighborhood bar, know the locals cuz it's good business.

When I'm working in my more high volume bars, happy hour is the only time for conversation. That's when I get some wierdos, junkies, Polish thugs, etc. who talk about some shady shit and scare away girls. Old Polish landlords are my favorite, those dudes have got stories. Old Puerto Rican neighborhood cats are great with the tales about how it used to be around here.

couldnt agree more with this.

i manage a nice, nieghbourhood place. we do lots for the local community (help charities, host events yada yada) and as such i see most of my customers day in day out.

like don says, its good business to know your customers. it all comes down to customer retention...you need to keep bringing people back in over and over again. to do this, your customer service game needs to be on point. seriously on point, everytime aswell - no off days! and mine is, so yes i know whats going on in my locals lives...i know who is cheating on who, who just bought what house and how much they paid, who accused who of child porn issues years ago, whether the local vicar is gay or not....

This. All the employees and regulars at my neighborhood spot are pretty tight

damn you people seems to have really small venues. doesn't that shit get boring? we have about 15 people on every night and 10 during the day. staffies is pretty interesting,

i can see how working with fuck all people, all the time, would get old quickly.

ive worked large venues which have required a lot of staff and that shit gets old quickly.

2000+ capacity nightclubs dont really care about the quality of the drinks they sell and can get away with murder. also fuck a working environment where you cant hear yourself think for loud, shit, repetitive music.

current place has about 120 covers max, and granted we're not at full capacity everynight but when we are we can handle it with me plus 4 staff - 2 bar and 3 on the floor...

I generally go to 4 different bars.

The one I'm mainly at is my neighborhood spot, which I've seen have like 5 people in it some nights, and other nights have like 200+ jammed in there so tight you can barely move. It's usually got 2 bartenders, and one door guy. Sometimes a 3rd bartender will jump on to help, they'll be an extra guy at the back door, or on slow nights they'll be one bartender and no doorguy, but that's their usual setup.

Next one is a hotel bar/restaurant, which is almost always dead (at least when I go), which is how I like it. Usually one bartender on, sometimes two, with a manager floating around, a hostess or two, and some waitresses.

Other one is a restaurant/college bar, that can also be empty or jam packed. Any night could be 1-3 bartenders, 0-2 door guys, a manager or two, and a couple of waitresses.

Last one is a trendier place where a friend works, that gets pretty busy. Three rooms, two bars, 4-6 bartenders usually, plus anywhere from like 3-7 bouncers

I love bar tending. It's certainly not what I'm going to do my whole life but for my teens and now into my mid 20s it's definitely something i enjoy and have fun doing. Reputable college degree? Yeah I have one, but am not ready to put it to use yet.

Just got home from closing down the bar, it was a shitshow in there tonight. This neighborhood is really big on the $5 shot and a beer special(tecate can and a shot of well tequila or a schlitz can and a shot of evan williams). At least the Dj was playing R&B jams that reminded all the girls of the first time they got fingerbanged, it was a nice throwback night.

I'm amazed at the amount of shameless shit I've done on camera at this bar and still remain employed. I guess the numbers don't lie when it comes down to it, we ring like champs even though we're creating surveilance videos of shameless alcoholics greatest hits...

yeah I'm in Brooklyn, workin tonight, we got some shitty bands opening for an awesome funk night.

Whenever bands play at my bar, nobody buys drinks while they're playing(I couldn't hear them ordering anyway) but we get the swarm as soon as they're done. It's an interesting dynamic. I probably ought to head over there soon and set up the PA and mic stands, the girl who's workin happy hour is clueless.

Sounds good, but I have bad experiences with tequila.

I think everyone has a bad story that starts with "well I was drinking tequila..."

Haha.

I know I certainly do. For a few years tequila would make me very angry and very violent, but after taking as year off I've been drinking it again and I'm all good.

One of these days I'm gonna go to NY and get drunk at Don's bar

that 5 dollar shot and beer combo sounds fucking AWESOME. i can't believe you guys have prices like that in brooklyn, but i don't know what's up (i live in houston). also, DonCheadle, i read earlier that you said you would get over 1 dollar per drink for tips if you're making good cocktails. is this good tip action? i have no idea what the average is, but i always tip at least a dollar for cans of beer and like 3 for whiskey and coke.
