Didn't really know what to expect, but I thought it was going to have more scenes of brutal killings or something, but for a drama movie it wasn't too bad. Alan Clarke is an incredible director with balls of steel. This set also has a short film (30 mins about) called Elephant, and it's not Gus Van Sant's horribly boring piece of shit angsty "epic." Clarke's has no dialogue in it, just IRA assassinations. But each assassination is one take, with some really incredible and long dolly shots. The film follows its protagonist as he initially observes and later participates in philosophical discussions that weave together issues such as reality, free will, the relationship of the subject with others, and the meaning of life. This was his first feature length film he ever acted in, obviously propelling him to a solid and very dignified career. Made in Britain was Tim Roth's first movie ever, and look at him! Gary Oldman didn't catch his start in a Clarke film, but The Firm is just another great movie where he does a great job. Alan Clarke is a man of instinct....
