I remember reading from a book on photojournalism that there in fact was a Red Cross or similiar aid nearby, that there were numerous other children in same condition, and that everyone was told not to touch the children in fear of epidemic infection. If I remember correctly, he even said to have driven the bird away after taking the pic. Not sure about that though. That picture affects feelings more than thousand words. I think people blaming him mustn't have thought the whole thing through carefully enough. I'm sure it would bring comfort to some people's lives had he helped the child. It might have been in time magazine I'm not sure. I read that The child died shortly after the photo was taken. He was rather shaken by the ordeal and regretful that he did nothign for the child.
