Parents say kid's thong is just plain wrong

Clothier selling skimpy skivvies for girls 10 and older

Calling it the "modern-day version of Underoos," a national clothing company is selling thong underwear in children's sizes - with the words "eye candy" and "wink wink" printed on the front.

Abercrombie & Fitch

The rearless underwear comes in sizes for girls ages 10 to 16. The smallest size - a medium - appears small enough to fit an even younger girl.

Abercrombie & Fitch, the same retailer that enraged parents last year with a summer catalog of teenage-looking models groping each other and in the nude, now offers several varieties of thongs at its Abercrombie stores, the division of the company for children 7 to 14 years old.

"It's cute and fun and sweet," said Hampton Carney, spokesman for the company based in New Albany, Ohio.

But some parents are far from tickled. In fact, they're outraged.

"I think of myself as fairly hip, and I think it's just disgusting," said Julie McNamara, a 40-year-old mother from Whitefish Bay.

The thongs, part of Abercrombie's summer line, sell for $7.50, or 3 for $15. Some have stripes, others are solid pink or blue. The solid-colored thongs have the words "eye candy" printed in a little pink heart and "wink wink" in a small green box.

The rearless underwear comes in sizes for girls ages 10 to 16. The smallest size - a medium - appears small enough to fit an even younger girl.

McNamara said she was livid when she stumbled upon the thongs while shopping for her three children at Bayshore Mall. She grabbed a pair and confronted a clerk at the register.

"I said, 'Will you tell me what this is?' They said, 'I know, I know, you're the fourth one today,' " McNamara said.

The flap over the thongs is not the first time that Abercrombie & Fitch has caused controversy for its edgy themes and designs.

Last year, the company caught ire from parents over its quarterly catalog, which was filled with models who appeared to be college age or younger in the nude, kissing and fondling each other.

The company defended its publication, calling it a celebration of a youthful and spirited yet responsible lifestyle.

Quotable

It's cute and fun and sweet.

- Lisa Maxwell,

parent

It's not appropriate for a 7-year-old, but it is appropriate for a 10-year-old. Once you get about 10, you start to care about your underwear, and you start to care about your

clothes.

i think the whole point of thongs is to not have panty lines if you are wearing tight pants. at least thats why i wear them (i don't think bojangles cares as long as they are off when they are supposed to be).

regular panties look bunchy and weird.

Its appropriate when your 10 when you start to care about your underwear? Who the hell even cares about their damn underwear? Shit...they're just askin for pedophiles and kiddy porn with this shit. "Eye Candy?"What the fuck. Whos eye candy is it for? the girl is like 10 with eye candy on her childrens thong, they just want little kids to prance around flashing kids with their cool slogans on their stylish underpantaloons. What are they trying to do anyway? Theyre trying to sell money so little kids can try to be "cool" and act older by wearing stupid thongs. Im glad there's not an abercrombie store around here or theyd get a guy fucking with them throwin things and calling them names

girls go to the mall with their freinds, go to victorias secret etc, and buy thongs themselves, you actually think any mom in her right mom would bbuy her daughter a lacy black thong with silver sparkles?!? unless your mom was a vegas lap dancer i highly doubt it

hahha...no kidding...those dumb fuckers have been striking out hard in the last month...now if they could only include secret date rape pill stash pockets in all their mens clothes, they would really be on a roll

....in all honesty, no one should care about panty lines on a 10 year old....

Jesus Christ, you kids are like the old guys from Foot Loose who outlawed dancing. Believe it or not, thongs serve a purpose. Ever been to a dance or a wedding where girls are wearing tight dresses? If they were wearing granny panties, those tight dresses would look pretty ridiculous. Its not like girls walk around in JUST a thong.

ya know, i always heard about that, but never got to see it.

oh, and about the thongs for 10 year olds...

all the morons saying that its ok, because it hides panty lines...well, hey stupid fucks, what are you doing looking at ten year old ace in dresses in the first place?? vanity SHOULD NOT be a fucking issue for 10 year old girls.

"man, look at that dumb bitch in the skirt, you can totally see her panty lines. who is that, anyway?"

"thats my niece, shes turning 8 next month."

damn, abercrombie is just trying to go all out!

i saw an article about their shirts being recalled after they were protested...it had two "japs" on it. lines for eyes, buck teeth. they had a wooden cart and a sign that said "two wongs can make it white!"

im not sure how i feel about this.

on the one hand i could say that a thong is harmless and a girl can wear whatever she wants, if youre turned on by it, youre the one with the problem, not the girl.

on the other hand, its just not right to promote overtly sexual clothing to girls that young. a 10 year old should not have something saying 'eye candy' on her vagina. thats sick.

so i feel like this. even though i dont agree with it, i support abercrombies right to sell them. its the same respect i ask from politicians who are against the lyrics in rap music - just because you dont like it personally doesnt mean it should be outlawed.

so...

bump for abercrombie pushing the envelope, i didnt think they had it in them.

thumbs down for 'eye candy' on the thong of a young girl.

bump for the freedom for people to have a decision in what they wear.

holy shit did you miss the point.....believe me, im a huge supporter of thongs, nothing ruins a nice booty like some panty lines but on a 10 year old??? yuck, it would be sickening just to see those things hanging in the store.....

Ten year old girls like to look like they're a little bit older than they really are. No one is telling you to look at 10 year old girls in the nude. These are underwear. You're not supposed to see them, especially on a 10 year old. You're all blowing this way out of proportion.

i meant to add that i am not condoning the babygirl thongs. ten year olds shouldn't be wearing anything tight enough to see panty lines underneath anyways.
