Driver found unbuckled in crash, but beer 12-pack safely belted in

Investigators were trying Monday to determine if a suspected drunken driver involved in a solo crash into a tree Sunday night failed to buckle his own seat belt even though the 12-pack he was carrying on the passenger seat was safely belted in.

Witnesses told Citrus Heights police that they saw the man driving north on Van Maren Lane in excess of 60 mph before he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree near Garden Gate Drive.

The driver suffered serious head and body injuries and he was rushed to a local hospital.

He was found still in the driver's seat, unrestrained, next to the 12-pack of beer secured by a seatbelt, according to a police summary.

A police traffic investigator is reviewing the incident.

Girl scout robbed of cookies

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/15054635/detail.html

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A Girl Scout who was robbed while selling cookies in her neighborhood led police straight to a 12-year-old suspect -- who wrote her name and address on a cookie order form before the theft.

The Girl Scout, 10-year-old Nicole Grant, wasn't injured. She tearfully told police she was out selling cookies with a friend when a girl ordered cookies from her, then snatched Nicole's zip-top bag containing $28 in cookie money and fled on a bicycle.

"She's still a little shook up, but she's fine," said Chris Grant, the Girl Scout's father, adding that his daughter went back to school the day after she was robbed Sunday.

Savannah-Chatham County police said they tracked down the suspect using the order form Nicole told them the girl had filled out before stealing her money. The Girl Scout later identified her as the thief. The suspect was arrested and charged as a juvenile with robbery, police said.

According to a police report, the young suspect denied stealing the money when questioned by police. Her mother declined to comment when reached by phone Tuesday.

Susan Reefer, director of fund development for the local Girl Scout Council, said it's the first time a Girl Scout has been robbed while selling cookies in Savannah -- the place where Juliette Gordon Low founded the organization in 1912.

According to Girl Scout policy, Nicole should have had a parent or other adult with her. Reefer said the council insists Girl Scouts aged 6 to 11 have adult supervision when making sales during cookie season, which starts in January and goes into March.

"All the girls in that age range must be accompanied by an adult at all times -- taking orders, delivering cookies, any cookie activity," Reefer said.

Grant said he didn't know his daughter had left home with her cash bag to make sales, which she had been told not to do without supervision.

"But you learn from your mistakes," Grant said. "And she understands that now."

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/graffitists-drown-in-drain/2008/01/21/1200764081353.html

Police will close the entrance to a stormwater drain in Sydney's eastern suburbs where two people drowned and a third miraculously escaped after torrential rain flushed them out to sea.

The survivor, a 27-year-old from Pennant Hills, told police they had entered the drain in Moverly Road, Kingsford, about one kilometre from where they were washed into the ocean.

Inspector Eddie Bosch said the group had been drinking alcohol and spraying graffiti inside the drain last night when they heard the sound of rushing water.

Report: N.Y. Cops Joked About Dying Man

Police officers were taped joking about a dying, homeless Guatemalan immigrant after he was found on the side of a deserted road in their suburban town, a TV station reported.

"You wanna hear something really funny? ... He's alive," a Bedford police officer tells a sergeant on a taped phone call aired Thursday on WCBS.

The two go on to marvel _ with the officer chuckling _ that Rene Perez had apparently revived himself temporarily after authorities thought him dead. The station said Perez died an hour after the officers' taped exchange April 28.

In a phone call to another Bedford sergeant after Perez's death, a Bedford officer sings the title line from the 1966 Left Banke single "Walk Away Renee."

Chief Chris Menzel defended the department, telling WCBS, "We are not callous or indifferent." He said he could not comment further on the ongoing case.

Through a translator, Perez's brother, Anival Perez, called the taped conversations disrespectful.

A police officer in neighboring Mount Kisco is charged with manslaughter in Perez's death and has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say George Bubaris drove the drunken Perez to Bedford, dealt him a deadly blow to the abdomen and left him to die.

Perez, 42, had a history of making drunken 911 calls. He called Mount Kisco police complaining of stomach pain on April 28, and police records show Bubaris reported there was no need for further action.

Lawsuits filed on behalf of Perez's family maintain that Mount Kisco and Bedford made a practice of "dumping" each other's undesirables in the neighboring town. Bedford police had taken Perez into Mount Kisco hours before Bubaris allegedly took him to Bedford, about 40 miles northeast of New York City.

CIA: Hackers demanding cash disrupted power Electrical utilities in multiple overseas cities affected

By Ted Bridis

updated 3:06 p.m. PT, Fri., Jan. 18, 2008

WASHINGTON - Hackers literally turned out the lights in multiple cities after breaking into electrical utilities and demanding extortion payments before disrupting the power, a senior CIA analyst told utility engineers at a trade conference.

All the break-ins occurred outside the United States, said senior CIA analyst Tom Donahue. The U.S. government believes some of the hackers had inside knowledge to cause the outages. Donahue did not specify what countries were affected, when the outages occurred or how long the outages lasted. He said they happened in "several regions outside the United States."

"In at least one case, the disruption caused a power outage affecting multiple cities," Donahue said in a statement. "We do not know who executed these attacks or why, but all involved intrusions through the Internet."

A CIA spokesman Friday declined to provide additional details.

"The information that could be shared in a public setting was shared," said spokesman George Little. "These comments were simply designed to highlight to the audience the challenges posed by potential cyber intrusions."

Donahue spoke earlier this week at the Process Control Security Summit in New Orleans, a gathering of engineers and security managers for energy and water utilities.

The Bush administration is increasingly worried about the little-understood risks from hackers to the specialized electronic equipment that operates power, water and chemical plants.

In a test last year, the Homeland Security Department produced a video showing commands quietly triggered by simulated hackers having such a violent reaction that an enormous generator shudders as it flies apart and belches black-and-white smoke.

The recorded demonstration, called the "Aurora Generator Test," was conducted in March by government researchers investigating a dangerous vulnerability in computers at U.S. utility companies known as supervisory control and data acquisition systems. The programming flaw was fixed, and equipment makers urged utilities to take protective measures.

Report: Worker tries to jinx Yanks with buried Red Sox shirt

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A construction worker on a concrete crew at the new Yankee Stadium secretly buried a Red Sox T-shirt under the future visiting clubhouse in an effort to jinx the Yankees, the New York Post reported Friday.

The paper cited two construction workers it did not identify, saying they were not authorized to speak with the media. One of the workers said the T-shirt was poured in a slab in the visitor’s clubhouse.

“It sounds like a tall tale, and it would take more than a Red Sox T-shirt to put a curse on the Yankees,” team spokesman Howard Rubenstein was quoted as saying.

The Yankees move to the new ballpark in 2009.
