also it sucks so many cool-hipster dudes are into track bikes now, it makes it hard for a real rider to pick up a nice vintage frame at a decent cost.

1) Hipsters have been into track bikes for the better half of the last decade.

2) By "real rider", I'm guessing you mean actual track racer, in which case vintage track frames have almost no intrinsic value unless you're a) over the age of 30 and started out racing on steel in your youth, or b) on the Japanese keirin circuit and therefore required to use NJS stuff. Aluminum and carbon are better in nearly all regards for down and dirty racing.

At that price your best bet is Craigslist. Or buying a mega-cheap bike... for around $50... and then converting it with the remaining $250. If you were looking for new you're going to have to bump that up to about $500 for something less than decent, but reliable. Unless you go with the SE Racing "Draft" single speed... $290

This is what I did more or less... only for alot less than $250... Frame for $40 (kept the existing bottom bracket), wheelset $90, chain ring, crankset, bars, brake, pedals, chain... all for free fifty free.

Recently upgraded to a set of continental gatorskin tires, which are super super nice. I had been rolling a set of used tires and getting mad flats until I made that move...

Also no longer using that fucking u-lock mount... shit rattled like hell.

been in Bahrain for the past few months, there are quite a few cool places to ride out here, and hoping to cover some more ground when time permits.

will throw a few pics up of the area for now.

It has been raining a lot for being on a desert island so every ride the bike ends up being pretty nasty, though I do have a lot of fun getting dirty.

merckx was belgian. merckx frames are made in italy

"The lineage of the Merckx bicycles comes directly from Italy. Started in 1981, Eddy Merckx used his friend ‘De Rosa’ from the great Italian frame building company De Rosa to consult with him technically and set the standards to produce some of the finest hand crafted frames in the world"

I stand corrected, I have an 04 Merckx cx frame and I always thought it was made in Belgium, are they still made in Italy?

Shit, zone 3 is the fun stuff... I have a blast doing those on any type of rolling terrain.

Right now besides basic LSD miles, I've been doing "slow frequency repetitions", some old school shit popularized by now deceased coach Aldo Sassi. 2 minutes trying to spin perfect circles under a big gear doing 40-60rpm, repeated 6x with full recovery (like 3-4 minutes outside, a hair more on the trainer) in between. Seems like it'd be a real knee buster but as long as my bike fit is on par it works well. We'll see how it fares come crit season though... since I can't lift right now (broken hand) this has been my alternative for strength training. I'm fortunate in that I had barely any off time before I could get back outside to ride with the cast on, but damn, I want to be able to throw sprints right now and I can't...

86 mile ride with a "measly" 1500 ft. of climbing for me (hey, it's Oregon haha).

Drinking the night before wasn't the best idea but fuck it. In for another 5 hour ride tomorrow. Trying to get that fabled 20 hour training week in this week and then rest hard afterwards.

Joker, you doing Cherry Pie, Sublimity and Banana Belt?

Shit, we got insanely lucky out in OR... it's been spring weather lately. Normally at this time of the year I'd be bitching about how I have to clean my rim sidewalls and drivetrain after every ride but it's been bone dry and warm here. A good refreshment from last year when the rain never stopped.

With that said... ride a mountain bike when it's snowy out :D
