Was it new or a conversion? More likely than not, you made the correct decision in not buying it. I commute on single speed but love my geared CX bike a whole lot more.

Well I can see that you are in The Land of The Heartless, so check out Shaker Cycle. You should be able to find a decent bike in there for 350-450. I don't know how new it will be, but it definitely will not be a piece of shit.

He should just get a cyclocross bike from bikes direct.
