long exposure photos are artsy fartsy when they're done right.. but they're almost pointless without a tripod or stabilizer of some sort.. I like the 2nd photo, but they aren't awesome photography.. I agree with you about not staging street photography, but thats what makes it such an art, you still have to make it visually appealing rather ur subjects directed or not...

for me its not so much a question of art/non-art. a lot of the photographs posted here aren't artfaggish shit, it is documentary

. it is more a question of, "have we seen unconscious bums a cajillion times?" "have we seen streaks of light created by shaky hands a thousand times?"

its fine if you wanna take pictures of homeless people, and you say that you want to give a perspective 'not normally seen',

but then you turn around and show a picture of a drunk on the ground, as if that was a new perspective on homelessness.

if you actually wanna do what you say, why dont you do a project on "the bright side of homelessness, etc."

one of the best pieces of advice i have ever received on documentary photography is, "never portray a subject pitifully". hope that helps.

and feel free to go through the hundreds of pages here, there are dozens of pictures like the two you just posted.
