  1. see and i agree that you can look at him and his career as an indictment of the form of capitalism we have in the united states — that his companies are built on lies and cranking out defective vehicles that kill their drivers and that is actually good business under this system because it is rewarding him and his shareholders. but you stumbled into making my earlier argument for me. why was he the only one who really succeeded? (there are other EV startups, but they're not really taking off.) the only reason he succeeded against car companies is because of money from the government. specifically the EV credits. because the car companies are in the business of selling cars, not selling production credits. again you're right that the car companies could've done this. but tesla did and it is the only reason they survived. musk borrowed billions from friends to float the company because they couldn't make cars and when they finally did you could park a better car in the panel gaps.
  2. and what's annoying is *when* this overvalued house of cards collapses it's gonna blow up the stock market.
  3. right but without government subsidies and selling EV credits tesla never would have worked. even with all that capital it came close to failing several times. they made more selling regulatory credits than cars until 2021. he would've torched all the money he made as a fake founder of paypal. it's not a car company — it's a securities/regulatory credits company. that's how they actually make money. it's what they actually want to buy and sell.
  4. bleh, i'm working through "Why Do I Have Numb Hands?" issues and am beginning to think i should've gotten a 58cm frame, not the 61. the culprit is most likely adding too much reach on the new bike. compared to the old bike it's +30mm on the effective top tube and i also added +20mm on the stem. this sounds like a lot, and it is. but per bikeinsights my panasonic was pretty upright and i had room to lengthen out. i'm not rolling my hips or getting neck pain. it's not THAT off. but i'm not sure if this is something i'll grow into, or that i need to start raising/shortening somewhere. feel dumb rocking an 80mm stem on a 61cm frame... but is it dumber to sell a bike you just built up? evergreen lesson... buy a bike that's too small!
  5. oh dude you'd (personally, i think) find lots of reasons to dislike elon. - built his empire on state and federal tax credits for EVs - is insecure and a phony. didn't co-found paypal but when x.com merged with confinity his terms stated that he would be referred to as a "co-founder." this also happened at tesla, which he also did not co-found but also sought (and got) title of "co-founder" as part of the agreement that made him CEO - tesla is now too big to fail. its valuation is so much of the nasdaq, and its shares so thoroughly distributed in index funds and etfs, that even though they make terrible cars that kill people they will not be allowed to fail. - he renamed twitter to x just because he never got x.com off the ground and thinks the letter x is cool. some people have really beautiful, inspirational life work. elon musk just wants to be "co-founder" of something named x and have it be successful. he's 0-2.
  6. the lineup was so good! sad to miss. it was genuinely pretty funny in retrospect. if it's not one thing it's another etc etc
  7. anxious/drug church/webbed wing. i ended up getting bronchitis a day before
  8. joined a local crew for about 15 miles of gravel + coffee along the river this morning, beat the heat at 7am.
  9. agreed, white would've been great here. i really thought the green beans would be sweeter than they were and overcorrected a little. it's easy to tone them down. white pizza with green beans, shallots, goat cheese, sausage or prosciutto would be top notch.
  10. you have until the end of next month to make a better green bean pizza. burn me player
  11. now i gotta plant the beans in spring and harvest? next summer's pizza is gonna be insane.
  12. a pizza with green beans on it to flex on @LUGR
  13. let's go you pizza eating motherfuckers. july 2023 green bean pizza. this was a 9/10, i wish i'd had a thicker crust. - thin crust - red sauce - green beans — tossed in olive oil and roasted immediately before baking the pizza - goat cheese - prosciutto
  14. exactly! i want something i can put big tires with a little tread on and take on the (flat) c&o or around town. something i can lock up and mostly forget about.
  15. never that. this is my week. new job and green bean pizza.
  16. check out the bikes here. this one in particular, a tracklocross bike? has horizontal dropouts, clears 42s? $330? 4130 frame? i'm intrigued. the r/xbikes guys like them.
  17. my man is hitting the trump cure. all you need is sunshine and bleach fellas
  18. wait this exists?! this is nuts. this one has dura ace cranks and hubs.
  19. anyone ever messed with the import mercier/motobecane bikes on bikesdirect.com? i need to build something single speed (or 1x?) on the cheap for riding around town. something that can get stolen and i won't be that sad about it.
  20. @Joker i love these tires! bought off a buddy who was cleaning out his shop. they're quick and great in the mud but too low PSI for loaded touring.. i got a few snakebite flats on the C&O's famous "mud buckets." that said i'm absolutely gonna mount them for my next unloaded gravel ride. crank length is 170. the pedals might be making them look longer.
