Everything you wanted to know about Ferris Bruller's Day Off

•Any news on a sequel?

No, rumours thus far about a Ferris Bueller's Day Off sequel tho I have heard that Broderick would be ready and willing. But as yet no real sequel rumours, well not to the extent of Pretty in Pink sequel rumours as listed at Coming Attractions.

There was a made for TV movie, using the TV series actors, entitled Ferris Goes to College, and Charlie Schlatter played Ferris. Sortta like the School's Out film for Degrassi, or the Saved By The Bell Goes to Hawaii TV movie. .

•What's this I hear about Anthony Michael Hall and the film?

John Hughes originally wrote the script for Anthony Michael Hall to play Cameron. However after playing Farmer Ted the Geek in Sixteen Candles, Brian Johnson the nerd in The Breakfast Club and Gary Wallace, another geek in Weird Science, Anthony Michael Hall turned down the part of Cameron for fear of being typecast. Enter Alan Ruck and the rest is history. Here is what Anthony Michael Hall said about it in an Entertainment Asylum AOL Chat.

"John actually had written Ferris Bueller for me. We both determined that I should move on to other things. I needed a break. I wanted to try some new things. So I did Out of Bounds. I can only think back and thank John. He changed my life forever."

•What is the name of the painting Cameron stares at at the Art Institute?

It is "Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte" and was by Georges Seurat you can find more information about from the Art Institute of Chicago's web site by clicking here. Or if you are interested in purchasing an art print of it see the question Where can I get an art print of that picture Cameron was looking at in the art institute?

•What's this I hear about Jennifer Grey and Matthew Broderick?

During the filming of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and until sometime in 1987, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were dating. Kinda funny know when you think about how Ferris dances to "I Dream Of Jeanie" cos he really did.

•Who is older Ferris or Jeanie?

I think it's generally accepted knowledge that Jeanie is a younger sister. Tho it is never stated in the film to my knowledge, but this fact puzzles me, as you would think the parents of a family would get the older child a car before his younger sister. My other theory is that are twins, with Jeanie being slightly older however Jeanie doesn't appear to be in any of Ferris' classes which sort of rules that out. Jeanie definitely can't be older however, cos Ferris is in his last year of school and Jeanie still also attends high school.

•Did the film win any awards?

To my shock, no the film was not even nominated for any Academy Awards, but Matthew Broderick did receive a 1987 Golden Globe Nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical.

•So if Matthew Broderick didn't win who won the 1987 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture?

Paul Hogan for Crocodile Dundee

•How much did the film gross?

The film made $28.6 million US in rentals and a gross of $70.136 million US.

•When exactly was it released?

In the USA Ferris Bueller's Day Off was released on Wednesday 11th June 1986.

•Is this a brat pack film?

No, even tho it was made by John Hughes who's closely associated with the Brat Pack, this film is essentially not a Brat Pack film, and none of the cast members are Brat Pack members

•Was that a real 1961 Ferrari 250GT California?

No, as Cameron stated in the film less than 100 of those cars were made with no two being the same. They are valued at over $3 million US and for more information on the car check out it's cast profile. The car used in the film was actually a modified MGB. And, according to Brad Williams (a visitor to this site), the company that modified for the MGB for this film and others, was actually sued by Ferrari for the use of it's logos, and with all the damages that were demanded to be paid by Federal courts, it actually went out of business soon after.

•How old were the cast members when the film was made?

Matthew Broderick was 23, Alan Ruckwas 29, Jennifer Grey was 25, Mia Sara was just 17, Charlie Sheen was 20 and Kristy Swanson was all but 16 years old.

•What was that parade for?

German American Appreciation Day

•Was that Matthew Broderick singing at the parade?

No, that was Wayne Newton singing Danke Schoen and of course the Beatles singing Twist and Shout. Matthew can in fact sing tho, as he showed in the 1995 Broadway production of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying?

•What's with the personalised license plates?

Everyone knows Cameron's father's Ferrari personalised license plate of NRVOUS standing for of course nervous. But additionally all members Bueller family's car's license plates were also personalised and referred to other John Hughes films. Tom Bueller's license plate reads MMOM referring to Mr Mom, Katie Bueller's reads VCTN referring to National Lampoon's Vacation and Jeanie's license reads TBC which of course refers to The Breakfast Club. Gary Eckhardt recently informed me that Ed Rooney's plates read 4FBDO, standing for, For Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

•Where were the filming locations?

-The outside school scenes were shot at Glenbrook North High School, 2300 Shermer Road, Northbrook, IL 60062. Whilst the interior of Shermer High School is shot in the former Maine North High School (same as The Breakfast Club)

-The Pizza parlor scene was shot in Brentwood, California, USA

-The exterior shots of the Bueller home were shot at Long Beach, California, USA in the 4000 block of Country Club Drive.

-The Blue "Save Ferris" Watertower, is off of Cedar Road next to the Northbrook Public Library, Northbrook, IL

-The art exhibition they visit is the Art Institute of Chicago, 111 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60603. Ph (312) 443-3600. Website http://www.artic.edu/aic/

-After Cameron freaks out in the car they take him to Glencoe Beach, at the end of Park Street on Lake Michigan in Glencoe, IL

-The Cubs game is of course at Wrigley Field

-The tower they look down on Chicago from is of course the Sears Tower

-The stock exchange they visit is The Chicago Board of Trade

-The German American Appreciation Parade occurs down Dearborn Street

-Cameron's house and the Ferrari garage (also known as the Ben Rose Auto Museum) are located at 370 Beech Street in Highland Park, IL (The garage is off the street a bit, and the entrance to it is not clear because it is not attached to the actual house. The driveway to the garage seems to be off of a street just west of the house, but it is private property).

-The orange sculpture Cameron and Sloan walk by is located near the corner of Dearborn and Adams in Chicago, IL

•Where did they stuff up in the film

According to the IMDB and other sources, here are the film's goofs

-The police officer that escorts Sloane and Cameron away from the float that Ferris is on loses his jacket in an overhead shot.

-At the baseball game, the ball is hit into right field, but caught by Ferris in the left field stands.

-Mr Rooney's suit loses an arm after he rings the Buellers' doorbell.

-The rear view mirror disappears when Jeanie is speeding home.

-Jeanie doesn't undo her seatbelt before she jumps out of the station wagon. And additionally in one shot of the car parked- the seatbelt is slammed in the door of the car and hanging out but when they cut back to the car seconds later- the seatbelt is gone.

-Ferris is confronted by Mr Rooney after 6pm, yet Rooney then gets on a bus full of school children carrying books. (NOTE: John Thompson who grew up in Glenview, Illinois and attended Glenbrook South High School from 84-88 informed me that both Glenbrook South and North had/have what we call late buses for students taking place in afternoon and evening activities. They were scheduled at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30pm. The routes were longer and required a bit more walking but this could easily be what Rooney hopped on!)

-At the end when Ferris throws the baseball at the stereo, he throws it left-handed (Matthew Broderick is left-handed), but the mitt the ball lands in is a right-hander's mitt.

-Near the beginning of the movie (after Ferris has left) there is a brief scene around the empty house. While the camera is in the kitchen you can see a reflection of one of the set guys moving in the fridge handle.

-Cameron's shirt with the The American Medical Association's symbol changes half way through the movie. You can see how they try to cover it up by turning it inside out, but it still shows.

-When the Ferrari goes through the window and the three of them are standing there, you can see the camera tape on the floor where they are supposed to stand. Also the broken glass on the window changes a bit over the course of that scene.

-When driving home form the city there is obviously a fake backdrop to simulate a moving car. The car can be seen to change lanes but Ferris never actually turns the wheel of the car.

-If you look closely every time a clock is shown you can tell they do not match up. The times match up at the beginning but then proceed to jump back and forth throughout the movie

-The Speedometer only goes up by 10 miles between the time Cameron freaks out and when they're back in the garage, but they stop at a famous Chicago lighthouse when Cameron freaks out that actually is 1/2 hour outside the city

•Isn't there a timeline problem with this film?

The Ferris Bueller Timeline Problem is a theory by J.L. Moss and others. I personally do not agree with this synopsis and upon further deeper analysis, it can be shown that Ferris, Cam and Sloane could in fact fit everything into the specified time period. The one major point that was out of synch was Ed Rooney getting on the school bus at 6pm, but this was even this was recently explained by John Thompson who grew up in Glenview, Illinois and attended Glenbrook South High School from 84-88. He informed me that both Glenbrook South and North had/have what we call late buses for students taking place in afternoon and evening activities. They were scheduled at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30pm. The routes were longer and required a bit more walking but this could easily be what Rooney hopped on!

Where I grew up, my twin brother and I were not allowed to be in the same class. This was a school policy. Twins often times have trouble making friends, because from day one, they've only hung out with each other. By keeping twins in different classes, they are forced to make individual friends and adapt their social skills. My brother and I went to a therapist for a while, because we refused to make any friends. We would ask to go to the bathroom during class so that we could meet up and hang out for a few minutes.
