TORTURE and assault charges have been filed by US authorities against two men suspected of throwing an Australian tourist into a burning fire pit on a Californian beach.

An Adelaide electrician, Robert Schneider, 26, was found in the surfside pit in Ocean Beach with third-degree burns on February 27. He had been attacked after an argument near a lifeguard tower.

The San Diego County district attorney's office said that two alleged transients, Damian Maple, 21, and Frank Montoya, 46, faced five felony counts and up to life in prison if convicted.

NBC television said the attackers allegedly took turns beating Mr Schneider before tossing him into the fire pit. He was left with broken bones and was covered in second- and third-degree burns.

Mr Schneider's parents, Judy and Peter Schneider, have travelled to San Diego to be with their son. "We got a couple of words and a recognition of who we are, and he started to cry," Mr Schneider told NBC.

"There were tears down his eyes. He had staples on his head from where his head was smashed open," Mrs Schneider said. "He had a laceration on his forehead, his face. His wrist was broken."

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that locals Carl Gregory and Roseann Iovine were planning to host an "Australian barbecue" on April 13 to support Mr Schneider's recovery.

The pair did not know Mr Schneider, but planned the fund-raiser after seeing a story of the attack, the paper said.

About 300 people are expected at the barbecue, to be held at the Bondi bar and kitchen in San Diego, said the restaurant's Michelle Whitehurst. The story of the attack had captured the attention of locals, she said.

"[Mr Schneider] was just on holiday here and he got attacked. It's very sad but we are doing whatever we can do to help. We've been getting lots of calls."

A foundation named "Friends of Robert Schneider" had been established to raise money for medical bills, Ms Whitehurst said.
