Theo Huxtable.
"The professor who promised to come yesterday didn’t. They say he’s coming tomorrow, though. One more clue. Someone made this guess. The painting depicts the Maslenitsa (Shrovetide, the feast on the last day before the Lent — the Brazilian carnival is the same holiday). It’s one of the holidays with pagan roots, and the celebration involves burning a strawman — symbolising, if I remember correctly, the ending winter. Now, could it be that you’re the burning strawman? To which the professor allegedly replied, “not a strawman — but close”. Also, he said the keywords are water and air. (Now that I think of it — could it be painted from the perspective of a falling, and possibly melting, snowflake? Was the phobia a fear of falling?)" Theo Huxtable.
i don't know but i do know the proffessor doesn't have a phobia of being late. he's on colored people's time *the people that say they know it should tell us, so when the proffessor comes and gives the "official" answer we can see if they're right

Gump47
A fear of drowning? It can be seen in the left hand corner, with the three horses: one head can be seen layn over the other’s back, as if he were tripping. The picture shows what happens BEFORE he fears the most: the horse trips, and the whole left carriage falls into the water, everybody drowns. It explains everything the professor said I think: “Remove all objects”: Water is a liquid, so you can’t remove the water. “One tiny thing”: Just the horse’s head. “Find the phobia, find the answer”: Explained above. “Fear of open spaces is close”: Water is everywhere. The person who made this has gone insane because he’s afraid of falling in the water, so he fears going outside as well, going insane slowly. “Water and air”: He’s afraid of drowning, not being able to BREATHE. The picture also may incur a fear of death itself, most likely by accident.

GuerrillaWon
is nephopobia the answer, please explain That's my guess. He said a rare phobia. He said remove all objects, so I thought just the earth and sky, plus or minus trees etc. The first picture looks like it's on a cloud, the second is smoothed out to not so much look like one. Plus it has less sky visible and the tree tops in the original that looks like clouds have been altered to not look so much like one. Then I read he said it has to do with water and air. I heard a *ding!* in my head. I got tired of racking my brain over it and am sticking with my theory until proven otherwise, but that's how I got to it, minus some minor details etc.
mindvapors
Hm, i can see that. Notice the cloud-like plumes of snow behind each sleigh are removed in the looney's rendition.

GuerrillaWon
Also the cloud like plumes from the chimneys are changed in crazy guys painting.
mindvapors
I read a pretty convincing potential answer somewhere else and i'll post if people are interested enough. Also, I was curious about the crease looking thing in the looney's version, so i managed to find a better image:
