RumPuncher
So a good friend is getting married and our mutual friend who actually is a Dj has a big gig the same day. Somehow I ended up getting pick as the 'music man' for this upcoming wedding. I have 6 weeks to learn how to beat match. My friend who is actually a dj is goign to lend me some tables to practice.... but I have question: Should I load up a laptop with MP3's? Maybe have another disc tray for requests? Build MP3 playlists in advance? The groom wants me to play the FUNK! but will I need the cheese too? Do wedding Dj's get laid if they are friends of the bride and groom? Should I bring a date if I know I'll be working the whole time? Will I have to MC too? luckily it's up in cottage country and the whole event is going to be chill, but it's still a little nerve wracking to think about it. http://www.unc.edu/~courtny/photos/wedding/dj.JPG'> ^ I'm worried this will be me!!! :o

synaps
you won't learn how to match beats in 6weeks ... building a few discs from the collection and playing/fading those may be your best bet ... bring some cheese, too. gotta try please everyone ... if you take a laptop and have decks, you'll need final scratch ... nomadawhat
instead of a laptop you could rent/borrow a cdj800 or 1000 or any cd dj machine that plays mp3's and burn a bunch on to a cd.
Guest
thanks nomada! I know you know your stuff. essentialy the guy wants funk, soul and grooves. I totally know the genres but I'm just not sure about putting them all together. Maybe have another disc tray for requests? I mean to have 2 tables, the laptop AND a stand alone CD player to put in request discs from whoever. I think I'll find a few good mixes (downtempo, soul etc.) just to put on while other shit is happening
Vanity
Originally posted by synaps you won't learn how to match beats in 6weeks ... but i wouldnt stress it... most mobile dj companies actually dont want their dj's to mix at all.... but you'll also have to talk alot and act like a game show host and shit. a wedding is the last thing i'd wanna dj... ClueTwo
Does a wedding reception really require you to match beats and all that mambo jambo? In my mind something like this should just be filled with corny shit like KC and JoJo and Boyz to Men= no mixing required. Of course, I'm not being paid to musically host a reception. So what I'm asking is: What are you really expected to do by these people? Are they expecting Herbie Hancock or something?
8onus
LET ME HELP YOU OUT. i am a bowling alley DJ(fuck all of you in advance) so i know a few things do the following: 1. be very interactive with the crowd. have a request sheet, a tip jar, make jokes, dedicate songs, trivia etc. 2. bring as much music as you can find. from all catagories, you never know. make a list of all you songs you have,(there are certain prgrams that do this with your mp3s) so that you and the requesting party can see what you do and dont have. bootleg a bunch of those gay ass "NOW thats what i call music" cds and you should have a lot of it covered. 3. have a back up cd player incase one fucks up, a discman will do. 4. you do not need final scratch, you wont even need to beatmatch at a damn wedding. just pick up the ends of songs quikly and say shit over the mic like"heres a goodie but an oldie" between songs. 5. if you play your cards right you should get laid. maybe twice. Guest
thanks for the advice guys. I know that having to beat match isnt going to be part of it. I'm a firm beliver that a good dj can just play the songs that people like and not worry about the technical stuff. Sellection makes the set. Obviously I'm not Jeff Mills and no one expects me to be. The groom wants funk and soul non-stop but that idea of grapping a bunch of 'modern hits' comp CDs is a good one.

Guest sneak
theres no point even bothering learning how to beat match, the majority of the tunes youll end up spinning will be a mix-match of genres and probably would be hard to mix together. the simple fade and switch tune should suffice... good luck! Guest
thanks sneak. I'm pretty sure that as long as there's no big gaps in between songs I wont get shit on. I know I'll play some grooves that the gorrm and friends will love, can speak for his parents tough. whatever.
