MayorMeanBeans
okay so tomorrow i start teaching a photography class for 5 kids aged 10-14, all of whom come from pretty rugged backgrounds a la the Shootback Project or Born into Brothels. I never took any photo classes besides a couple joke ones from the shitty high school i went to. The kids are going to have digital point and clicks. What sort of advice should i offer? I figured you guys will have some good insights. thanks in advance.

I mean, I like the backlighting. I probably wouldnt have used a flash it wouldnt have been like a stop or two under whatever the helmet meters at. But then you wouldnt have time to meter and shit so you did the right thing. Good picture.

Guest JohnLester#31
This weekend, a good friend of mine who's been into sailing throughout his life preformed in a regatta. For a while there had been talks about taking a trip with him to one of his races but never got the chance until now. He sails a 29er (a type of skiff sailboat made to catch fast speeds under wind currents) which has the ability to hydroplane on water and gets up to roughly 35 knots. there weren't to many of them out on the water during the event, but they're much more popular out on the west coast. I tried to stay as in-tuned as possible with the terminology and lingo but its honestly too technical to remember half of the things said to me about the sporting event and the boats themselves. Definitely a subculture that doesn't get a lot of rep that should. I would have loved to get out on the water and take photos of the actual racing but didn't get the chance, so a lot of the shots I took are of morning setups and the boats coming off of the water. Balance is key when sailing these. The boats with the white sails are called Lasers and are a lot less complicating to sail and setup. Whipping out happens often. They two ended up coming in third after leading Friday and Saturday in first. Poor last day for them.
Guest JohnLester#31
Here are a bunch of other shots I took while I was at the event this weekend. This was in a tree that had been cut down and left on the side of a pathway. I was fortunate enough to capture this. I was walking in front of a tree along the shoreline when I saw the dragonfly flying around, then landed. Thought about this joint when I flicked this. ^Bump

MayorMeanBeans
a couple images from the past couple days "live your life, don't be bad" right now i am writing a photo project proposal, definitely have the subject matter and narrative on paper down. but i don't really know much about actually constructing a photo essay. among you guys out there who do, do you guys essentially write a real essay like one would in college, except more or less substituting photos for paragraphs/ideas? thanks in advance
