I had the honor of meeting Sure briefly just a couple of months ago, when he came out to see Twist painting the Bowery wall, and he mentioned that he was about to ship out for a tour in Afghanistan. I was surprised by how young he was; because he had been bombing New York so prolifically for so long, I assumed he must have been older. I've always admired his handstyle-- easily one of the best in the game-- and I'm sure I will continue to run across his work around the city for years to come. Stories of a hit boy, maybe as young as 12, spread after a YouTube video appeared last month with teens mugging for the camera next to corpses and guns. One boy on the video alleged that "El Ponchis" was his accomplice. State and federal authorities refused to confirm El Ponchis even existed. In the video, the youth told an unseen questioner that his gang was paid $3,000 per killing. "When we don't find the rivals, we kill innocent people, maybe a construction worker or a taxi driver," the youth is heard saying.
