Hua Guofang
Always liked Banksy (he, them, whatever...), never understood the hate he copped in here. This was another great move but I'd like to know how the printer was activated remotely after all this time.
Mercer
Due to the timing, my theory is very close range with a discrete radio transmitter. Someone had to be in that room.

Kults
What a joke. So obviously set up and fake. Fuck Banksy and fuck the hype surrounding that guy. His fans would call his farts strokes of genius.

The guy comes out of the woodwork every few years to put up stencils with a team of people. Never understood what got people so hyped for this guys ‘work’. misteraven
Agree, my opinion is that the entire thing was staged and likely in cooperation with Sothebys. Like they're actually going to allow some painting with a weird frame and likely weird weight into a vault with all the other expensive shit going up at auction. Fake news. STYLEISKING
def. a stunt, artworks done in 2006, didn't the auction house inspect it as an original, but somehow missed the shredder? also do batteries last that long?
Hua Guofang
Yeah, that was my question as well. How does a remote switch get triggered after sitting idle for so many tears. Either way, setup or not - did it interest/entertain me for a few minutes? Yes! Box ticked. I don’t need to go any deeper on it than that, really. It is what it is and now back to internet porn and car crash videos ?

I agree with this, the blades in the video showed them laying flat, there's no way those blades could have shredded the paper if they were placed like that. One Man Banned
Eh. The 'news' report I saw stated that Sothebys has said they were not in on this, if you choose to believe. Definitely a stunt. Somewhat amusing. Personally have been a fan since before it was cool to be. Appreciate his sense of humor, remaining anonymous, feel he's gotten some decent work into some tight spots, hard for me to hate on those qualities. You don't think paintings sold for that much money are authenticated and every minute detail inspected..? Including the frame? Personally I don't see how this benefits Sothebys other than making them look incompetent. This created buzz for him, nothing more. He isn't anonymous and hasn't been for years. Just google Banksy identity.
One Man Banned
Like yourself and others speculating, I am unaware of their authentication methods. If an artist delivered them something inside a custom built frame I don't know that they're going to disassemble or otherwise take apart the frame to look behind it as I imagine that could affect the value of the piece. I think they're primarily concerned with is the piece an authentic creation by said artist. If they were delivered a painting described as by Van Gogh and made from dog shit on burlap bag I doubt they're testing to see if shit and burlap are present, they just want to know it's a Van Gogh, not a Chinese knock off. Like many people I considered if Sothebys was in on this but then I also considered that they're a reputable dealer moving authentic, valuable pieces. While some people would chalk this sale up to Banksy being Banksy, I imagine that Sothebys has a rep to protect as well and their average buyer wants assurance they receive their purchase in one piece. Likewise I imagine there could be ramifications to shitting on a million dollar sale unless there was some prior clause involved in the sale of the work. I agree with Brink that the stunt likely increased the value of the piece, but that was not 100% before the stunt and still isn't what the buyer paid for. I haven't followed this too closely but I haven't seen anything mentioned about the buyer/sale/$/value. Anyhow, no fucks to give out here but it is fun to see people get upset with a dude who has stated in so many words that if the best his work does is give a laugh to some guy taking a piss by a wall then he's content. Hua Guofang
Yeah, I've mentioned the battery issue myself up the page but I don't think any auctioneers like Sotherby's are in the business of pulling art out of their frames and such before they auction them. Kults
At the appropriate time, IFAR will ask to examine the work in person. If necessary, we will recommend laboratory analysis (e.g. X-radiography, infrared reflectography, pigment or media testing, fiber analysis, etc.), often at additional cost. https://www.ifar.org/authentication.php If nothing else the scan would have picked it up. There is absolutely no way they just overlooked a fuckin shredder and an engine in the frame.

Mercer
His IRL, and public facing alter ego is of no consequence to fans, or non fans alike. The only time I think I'd pull the "I'm Banksy" card myself is bagging groupies. Other than that linking the two identities is pretty much useless outside of law enforcement. One Man Banned
Stop snitching? Seeing discussion of his identitty in graf forums is kind of.... hmm, I don't know. Not sure that ironic or hypcritical fits. Dude gets known as an unknown doing illegal shit. Fans of his illegal shit want to expose who he is publicly, which does somewhat nullify his gig if not worse. Adding to it all, I believe Banksy has an above average understanding of the power of anonymity as he's mentioned it in his earlier writing. Not accusing anyone here, but some of these graf groupies are willing to destroy their hero in order to get closer to him. Fitting to steal a quote from him and say it's not that it's over their heads, they just ducked.
