How to choose and install bicycle streamers on a child's bike

When you kids want streamers for their bicycles, you should know you have options. A guide to storebought and homemade streamers.

What is a kid's bike without the ever - popular streamers? Bicycle streamers are certainly not a new idea, because they have been used by kids for years as a way to decorate their bicycles.

Streamers are just one of a number of accessories that a kid can add to their bikes in order to personalize them, as well as make them more colorful.

What are bicycle streamers? They are long, and they are usually made of thin plastic strips that are twisted together at one end. This end is connected to the bike at the handlebar grips. Then, when the bike is being peddled by a kid, and it is moving quickly in a forward motion, the wind catches the streamers and they blow in the breeze.

Streamers are sold in pairs - one for each side of the handle bar on the front of a bike - and they can be purchased at most bicycle shops. They come in every color imaginable, and your child can choose what color and style they like best. Bicycle steamers are also available in different sizes.

Instead of purchasing them, you can also help your child make his or her own streamers. You can recycle an old pom pom, for example, to make several pairs of streamers. All you have to do is to either unattach or cut off some of the streamers on the pom pom. You will need to have at least ten individual streamers to make one bike streamer. (For the sake of safety, make sure that the streamers are long enough to blow in the wind, but make sure that they are not too long. Streamers that are too long can get wrapped up in the wheels or pedals of your child's bike and cause them to crash and get injured.) On one end, insert a long screw or bolt with a small head into the streamers, with the head sticking out. Now, twist the ends of the streamers together and wrap them tightly with a piece of durable string or wire. Repeat this process to make the second streamer for your kid's bicycle. Then, to install the streamers, just push the screw or the bolt into each hole that is located at the end of the rubber handle bar grips. If the bicycle has open - ended grips, you can purchase handle bar plugs. These rubber inserts have holes in their middles, and they slide into the ends of the handle bars. So all you have to do is attach the streamers, then install the handle bar plugs.

If you want to remove the streamers, all you have to do is to carefully pop the screw or bolt out of the rubber handle grip. Or, you can remove each grip or plug and pull the streamers through the open end.

You can also use novelty yarn that looks like ribbon to make streamers. It's available at your local fabric store. Bike streamers can also be made out of strips of plastic garbage bags. They can also be made out of strips of plastic grocery bags too. If you want the streamers to be different colors, such as bright, fluorescent colors, you can paint the bags first and let them dry before you cut them into thin strips with a pair of scissors. Cloth handle bar tape works well too. It comes in various colors, such as yellow, red, white, orange, black, gray, green, and blue that you can mix and match.

Whatever material you use, just make sure that it is light enough to blow freely in the wind.
