hey, mikro, thanks a lot for taking your time out to help me. The pc is at my brother's friend's house, so I'm just hoping here that I can get it back. I never saw the error screen myself - I was just told about it. My brother's words were that the hd was fried, and it was blue-screening.

What's weird is that I hardly ever used that computer. Once a month, at most. It was just sitting there, so I don't see why it would be all fucked up all of a sudden...especially when it's my brother who turns it on for the first time in years. Highly suspicious...

if it makes a clicking noise then it's probably broken. data recovery costs a LOT... anywhere between $200 and $1000, depending on the circumstances.

for the second time in one week i had to reinstall windows last night. sometimes i really hate technology. it's all because of Panda Titanium Antivirus. it virtually punched my computer in the nuts several dozen times and then proceeded to smash its head in with a golf club, rendering it completely useless. albeit i did download it from suprnova, so there's no guarantee it wasn't riddled with viruses, but still...

so now i'm back to square one. again.

lol

ok well you should download a free antivirus and not from some site like that now if i ripped a copy of something like that i couldnt think of a better place to install lots of nastys to take control of your computer, and steal all you passwords.

damn!

casek would be proud of me.

I just hunted down and destroyed the single .dll

that was keeping ie6 from running. (I use firefox)

But I needed to run ie to do the windows update but

NOT update KB824141 because that will fuck with some

software I need for work..... plus I had to update the auto

launcher of that software from 2.3 to 2.6

wow.... nerdlyfe!

you can do HD recovery by yourself, there are tons of free softwarez available online. google it.

'hard drive recovery software'

i have a few programs, if i can dig them up, i'll post 'em or aim 'em to you guys.

well see the problem is how do i run that when the computer cant detect it.. Its not installed right now i put in a new one.. so i doubt its possible...

key, i am proud of you! word the fuck up homie!

earmuffs: you'd run the broken hard drive as a slave and install the program to retrieve data on the good HD. just some moving of jumpers on the back of the hard drive.

gimme a little bit and i can go find the hardware and some instructions that you can read over and decide if you'd like to attempt it or not. it's not really hard to understand, but i can understand why some folks wouldn't ant to go through the hassle of doing it. it can take some time.

EARMUFFS

there are several selections.

PC INSPECTOR

VAIOSOFT MEDIA RECOVERY

DELETED FILE ANALYSIS TOOL

ok, i recall having used the pc inspector tool. it's easy to use, menu driven, etc. let me know if you have any trouble or questions before you attempt to recover or while you're recovering. just a warning:it can take a considerable amount of time to scan for files that can be recovered.

ok i had the broken one hooked up as a slave but im not sure if i did it correctly... nothing shows up as a new drive.

did you daisy chain it?

for example: your master drive has an ide cable going to it and it should have one more place on it to hook up a hard drive....i assume you changed your jumper to slave on the broken drive. so, if that didn't work, your hd might just be busted like whoa. i'm a little sleepy, so i may not be giving you the full scoop on what else you can do. lemme sleep on it and get back too you in the morning.

good luck.

yeah, go for a router, and no, it probably won't fuck with your download speeds enough to notice...unless your mom is downloading huge files at the same time. doubtful. it's not anywhere in the mom rule book...oh, wait. there is a claus that says if she's into porn or stealing movies...it's a revision, though. i wouldn't trust it. go for the router.
