to trace an image:

 

1) find an images

2) trace the shapes

3) man up

4) voila

there isn't really anything you can do with shading in illustrator unless you are familar with crosshatching. in cs4 they have gradients that can fade to transparency so that might be what you are looking for.

 

as far as smooth transitions of color and pixels, stick to photoshop.

 

photoshop=raster imagery (images made up of pixels)

illustrator=vector imagery (images not made up of pixels)

yerp. lol, its the dom & roland productions logo.

 

 

type out the letters you want, then, while they're still selected, go to effect>3d>extrude&bevel

 

dunno how to get that concrete fill though, explore the prog a bit.

 

afaik he did that in vectorworks.
