HOLT CEMETERY

a little info: holt is one of the few cemeteries in new orleans that's not above ground. this place originated in the 19th century as a burial place for homeless people, unclaimed bodies, or the extremely poor. due to lack of space, bodies were placed ontop of eachother. now holt functions as a cemetery primarily for the poor. it's pretty famous for its homemade headstones and strangely decorated plots.

it's also known as a serious hotspot for occult activity, especially at night. (i think that this has to do with the fact that about 15% of new orleans residents practice some form of voodoo, and the cemetery is about 99% black. also, bones are readily available. the heavy rain and soft ground sometimes allows bones to rise up to the surface) once i found a hole dug in one of the graves with a headless dove in it. pretty strange. also, the day that i took these pictures, the security guard at delgado community college (the cemetery is behind the school) warned me not to come back due to "the bums and devil worshipping freaks." he also said that the week before, another security guard at the school walked into the cemetery and blew his own brains out.

anyway, here goes...

^the grassy, "empty" areas like these are actually cluttered with small headstoned, but the weeds keep them covered

magnolia on the other hand looks like an abandoned hospital.

lafitte isn't as ugly as others, but if you're actually there you'll notice all the litter everywhere, and on average, your chances of being murdered in any of new orleans' projects are 18x higher than the national chance. so when i'm taking pictures, it's quick in and quick out.

less depressing flicks tomorrow

^^magnolia is basically split into 2 parts, one is in better condition than the other if i'm correct. in the worse half, most of the residents have been transferred to other projects downtown (lafitte, st. bernard, iberville, etc.) whether they like it or not. that shift from uptown to downtown has caused alot of rivalry-based violence recently. anyway, yeah most of the magnolia will eventually be demolished and rebuilt.

they already did it to the florida pj's and now it's a bunch of multistory, vinyl-siding units painted bright, gay pastel colors. it looks like fuckin disneyland, but in 6 months i'm pretty positive it'll look like the shithole slum it really is. it's funny how the city of new orleans sems to think a pretty mask will decrease the murders & drug trafficking that takes place in those projects.
