That kind of activity has since died down quite a bit, but it's still there and the arrival of the anti-retroviral drugs has made a lot of gay men very complacent about safer sex. As a result, the number of new HIV cases is going up and syphillis and gonnorhea (spelling?) are spreading like crazy though the gay community. I think also that Isaac's question leads to the observation that guys (straight & gay) tend to be more comfortable with the idea of casual sex and sex with multiple partners than women. That's part of why gay guys tend to have more sex than straight men, straight women or lesbian women... there are simply more willing and available partners for gay men (at least in large cities).
