Casek: Do you routinely run Tor? I was reading their FAQ and it seems like somewhat of a shady program..Is it, in a nutshell, a downloadable proxy?

yeah, i use tor. it's safe.

sort of a proxy. more like an onion...which enables you to be more private.

i ran some test with it and without it, seems my computer is pretty much in stealth mode at all times anyhow.

there are some personal reasons why i had to take extra steps, though.

here's a camera hack for that damned cvs video camera...

now you can save the shit.

i checked out that link and did the hack i got my PalmIII sync cradle from froogle.com for like less then 10 dollars didnt take long to put together went to cvs and picked up the cam and it works great thats a nice lil hack

aight... im starting to run short on ram... but a friend just gave me their old compaq deskpro EC.. super old Pentium III processor and a drive of about 15 gigs. The drive says on it "Slave Off"... does that mean that the drive cannot be made into a slave drive? and do you know of any other componets i might be able to strip from this hunk of scrap that might help my computer function a bit better/faster. thanks homie.

dope thread.

the drive is a Maxtor 15 gig. Im stoked, because that doubles my available gigs, but I was hopeing it was at least 50.. oh well. I did figure out which port was the slave via google. As far as the ram stick goes, i was told it wont work because it was designed for NT.. but i will give it a go... it wouldnt hurt to have more available ram.

Thecompaq also has a P3 chip. My XP has a P4... any recomendations?

NO. You cannot put that ram in your computer you have right now, and nobody should have been recommending that you try it. That old ram is going to be PC100 or 133 SDRAM most likely. RAM isn't going to be "designed for NT", it has absolutely fuck all to do with the operating system. Pentium IVs will have either DDR or RDRAM, most likely, although I recall some cheap early ones using something else.

SDRAM:

RDRAM:

rdram.jpg

I use FireFox to take advantage of the NoScript and AdBlocker plugins in particular, but it most definitely isn't faster or better than IE, only somewhat safer. I still use IE sometimes if I'm going to be visiting websites that I know won't have any nasty embedded shit, for speed's sake.

take a ram stick out of it, plug it into your computer and see if it works. do the same with the drive. i forgot which pins are slave, cable select, etc. maybe someone here knows. what brand is it?

The pin settings differ depending on brand/model of hard drive. There should be a sticker on there somewhere that will give you the info on it. I've never heard of a drive that couldn't be set up as a slave. It is also possible to run your primary hard drive as a slave and the new one as a master, however you would want to format/repartition the other drive to make sure there is no operating system. If you can give me make/model of the drive, I'll give you the pin settings to make it a slave.

Early budget P4 systems did use SD ram, then again, some of the higher end P3 systems used RD and DDR ram, so the best bet would be to compare the sticks in the old tower to the new tower. No way to tell for certain with the info he has given us.

Casek, dont know if this has been covered in this thread or not. I am not able to access secure web pages and my computer restarts itself automatically everyonce in a while. I had the desktop hijack virus before and cleared that up. I have been searching around the PC help forums and have tried different solutions I found there. Still cannot access the secure sites though.

Oh yeah, now I remember. Those early budget P4s that were being grossly underclassed by the ram and performed worse than mid range PIIIs because of it.

Newer P4s are using DDR or DDR2, aren't they?

Anyway I'm betting on his old ram not being compatible.
