Very very true, and Terminator 2 isn't even all that bad as a movie since it was written so that all the cgi revolves around T1000, which in turn is explained in the film to be a trippy looking liquid metal thing. That way the viewer expects only the T1000 to look weird as all the other sfx elsewhere in the film are quite ok and mostly models or actual cars exploding.
Nowadays they just have this wrong idea that "anything can be done" with computers, so they write shit that is impossible to make look good. Nearly any decent artist or sensible person can tell you that it will NOT look ok if you attempt to generate complex physical phenomena with mere imagination and computers. Even if it's nice looking, it will look stupid cinematographically, colour-wise, and like it was written by someone: "slab falls from roof and makes the staircase collapse to the foreground"
