A little while ago i was getting tattooed and this news report came on the tv, some thing to the extent of "Man mauled by chimps (over a birthday cake he had brought for another chimp)" .. anyway, looked it up, heres the story.

    Extent of chimp attack revealed

By Karen Rubin , Staff Writer

WEST COVINA -- The wife of a West Covina man mauled by two chimpanzees disclosed Thursday the animals bit through her husband's skull and doctors are treating his brain for swelling.

Loma Linda University Medical Center doctors inserted a rod and three intravenous tubes to deliver antibiotics into the brain of St. James Davis, 62, said his wife, LaDonna.

"The chimps bit the back of his head and penetrated his brain,' LaDonna Davis, 61, said. "He has brain swelling.'

On Wednesday, he underwent a six-hour surgery to clean and rebuild an eye socket, she said.

The March 3 attack left the former NASCAR driver without a nose, cheek, eye, all of his fingers, his testicles, part of his buttocks and a chewed ankle.

"He is in a medically induced coma,' LaDonna Davis said. "He still has a lung infection and the doctors are concerned about pneumonia.'

Doctors have performed skin grafts on his forehead and a section of his lip.

LaDonna Davis lost a thumb, which is now infected. She said she is taking antibiotics for it.

The attack occurred when f our chimps escaped from their cages at Animal Haven Ranch , a Caliente-based sanctuary. The Davises were visiting with their 39-year-old pet, Moe, to celebrate his birthday when they were attacked by the two male chimps . St. James Davis took the brunt of the attack. Both male chimps were shot dead and two female chimps were found wandering the grounds.

Moe is living at Animal Haven because the Los Angeles County Health Department took him from the Davises in 1999 after he bit several people. He was placed in the Wildlife Waystation and then transported to Animal Haven 2004.

The Kern County Sheriff's Department and the state's Department of Fish and Game investigated the attack and turned their findings over to the Kern County District Attorney's Office. Both offices met this week to review the case and prosecutors sought the opinions of other attorneys, said Kern County Sheriff's Cmdr. Hal Chealander.

No decision on filing charges has been made public. And officials still have not released their findings.

How the chimps got out of their cages is still a mystery.

Virginia and Ralph Brauer, the owners of Animal Haven, have declined to comment.
