Pet
ALL of my travel threads (totally two of them) disappeared in April so I figured I'll make a thread and not post this in the MYDAYINPIES thread. So yea. Wait 'til the end and then criticize me if you want to, okaaay? My weekend. (IRC saggin wonk the location I guess) Got on the bus with my classmates to head north to an industrial town filled with Russians. Just to socialize with the Russian youth. Tickets by the school. Cows Water in sight One hour in the bus and it's possible to notice more Soviet architecture Trains, trains Some bus station, notice the W-Burger The bum on the left crashed into the dumpster with his chin in about 5 seconds Passing the largest abandoned building in Europe - it was supposed to be a uran refinery, but then the Soviet Union collapsed Walking to the local school with me mates Some raw stuff by the locals A demo lesson by Russian kids in Russian, rather interesting, understood about 17.5% of the talking Busride to the coast to see some local sights, getting rainy Walking to the site(yes, those are the local teachers on the right) This is where the presidents summer manor used to be, sadly the Germans blew it up during World War II Enjoying the view Spotting some oldschool stuff, you can find gold in these kinds of places Riding back to the school Back at the school, socializing. Walking through the town to the place where I was to sleep at night. Accommodation in local families - interesting And now to the fourth floor Got lucky, stayed at a local rhymewriters appartment. He made good beats too, heh. And played "Hotel California" on his guitar. I'll continue soon... You know you don't have to disapoint... (shitstorm approaching)

Pet
Haha, greets. So. The guy in the last pic. We started talking (a rather forced friendship, you know) and I asked about some places around town I had checked on Google Earth and some sites. Showed him some of my photos and he said he'll call a friend who has a car and we'll ride around town and take photos. Okay, I thought. We went out to wait for his friend in front of the house and - badum tsh - there he was with a nice two-door Mercedes sports car. Heh. And away we went An abandoned street somewhere there The port. Ships transport new cars (Nissans if I see correctly) from Asia and Europe here and then trailers take them to Russia. The cheapest way for the companies Bones by the sea Some bunker right next to the port. Bunkers everywhere. The town used to be closed (no foreigners or people from other towns let in) during the Soviet times, it was the home of many war supply factories. They say some parts of the first Soviet nuclear bomb were built here All that was left in that bunker were some instructions on the walls and ventilation pipes. Boring actually A Russian trailer driver noticed us when we descented from the underworld and asked for some cigarettes. The guys told him I was a photographer from the south and that I take photos of old houses. It impressed him. Hehe. So I took a flick of him too A friend called and said they were already "meeting up" at someones house so we drove to the shop to get some beverages From that moment stuff got really blurry About 2am or something, walking to the appartment Yeap. And as we arrived - night tea and barankas. Damn good. It was tea here and tea there. They offered tea all the time. A cultural thing *** Saturday morning. Got up at 8 to go and walk and flick the surroundings. A kinda legendary place. Flicks have been circulating on the net for a long time... About 15 years old as they said. On the wall of a dorm Some appartment area About 5km from the town. There were large battles between the Germans and Russians during the WWII and there are cemetaries and memorials for both sides Memorial for the dead Russians(a big holiday had taken place a few days earlier, explains all the flowers) Memorial for the dead Germans Maybe someone here can read it, hehe
Pet
A view of the surroundings Checked the factory too - cutting wire, security car chilling at the corner, port area. Definite night mission for the summer Meeting up with the class again at the towns museum. Some creepy dolls LOOK HER IN THE EYES Stones and shit The owner(and the guide) played some music from the deep dark times. Told stories how they got records from the west to listen to. Boogiewoogie kind of records. Back at the appartment. DAMN that guys mother spoiled me with her food. I ate as much food in those two days as I usually eat in a week. You can't tell a Russian mother your stomach is full, that is probably the worst insult you can do you know 1pm and people got on the bus. Time to move home. Well, not for me. Stayed to wait for some other bus Said goodbye to my new friends, hope they will come over here during summer and off I went to another destination Met up with another guy And rolled through the uglybeautiful landscape Passed by all kinds of interesting places Imagine living here for your whole life In the middle of the forest Where there is only this one house that is 500 meters long About 4pm, arrived at our ultimate destination and met up with two more guys. Getting interesting, walking somewhere... Over the rails Just keep on walking.................... And changing clothes. I'll continue tomorrow, need to sleep. Cheers, mates! Pet
Sooo. Now we're in an abandoned building in the middle of an industrial area and have changed clothes. It's about 5pm. And off we go. Down the stairs And we're under! Keeping on walking for some time... Setting the tripods up And it's time to take more photos About four hours down there and we check the map The red upper part of the map is where it should be possible to walk, the lower black part is supposedly totally under water ~12pm, midnight, having a snack Candy called "Digger" Someone had been there before - they left a mattress there. Pure mystery There was this main tunnel and then there were side tunnels which had been sealed so they wouldn't need to ventilate them back when the mine was still functional. Walking through one of the seals Digging through one of the toughest blockages. A railroad crossed the tunnel overground so this part was made of concrete. It was kinda interesting to hear a train rolling ~8meters above my head A pretty nice tunnel Somewhere around here we had another picnic and I fell asleep for two hours. Woke up not just shivering but totally shaking for fifteen minutes Group photo. Don't ask what we were doing, I guess it was around 3 in the morning The rails were still inside one far tunnel
Pet
The end of the rail tunnel Climbing over some drainage canal This place was totally Indiana Jones Almost out again, train depot area There's the exit...... And we're out. 6am. Walked down there for 13 hours. Aaaaah the feeling of morning sun Continuing in a few hours.

Pet
Walking towards the railway station at 6.30 Train from Moscow passing by Industrialismus Waiting for the train On some pole at the station. Anyone can read it? Suddenly, a train and tens of people getting on it *sleeping on the train* Chilling in some other town aftera one hour trainride and waiting for the next train to take us further. Breakfast Here's our train Unusually long train Riding in 0.5 class and spotting tags on the passing cisterns Getting closer to the capital, passing the oldest commuter train in service around here *sleep for an hour* In the capital. Tram raid for riders without tickets Linnahall is a concert/sports venue. It is situated on the harbour, just beyond the walls of the Old Town and was completed in 1980 for the Olympic Games. Soviet architecture, exotic for you wessies The front(the "city" in the background) The back. There used to be a heliport here but the chopper crashed.
