I don't give a fuck about what the indians have or dont have. I'm just baffled by the stupidity of californians to go "yeah this sounds like a good idea." and vote for it.

Maybe the Californians that voted for it just want casinos in their state.

And maybe some of them think the Indians deserve a tax break being as we did steel their land and almost whipe them out in the process and all that stuff.

DAO, the problem with this is that it was sold as a shot in the arm for the tax base that would triple the amount of Indian gaming in CA, but there's going to be no actual oversight by the state into what the casinos earn.

This isn't a tax break, it's more like highway robbery. If casinos want to claim that they only made $1 of taxable income in a fiscal year EVEN THOUGH THEY TRIPLED THEIR POTENTIAL REVENUE, technically they can do it now as the law stands.

Soup, I wouldn't worry. The state is going to eventually realize that they blew it and amend or attach riders to the law.

The issue for me is that Gray Davis (our previous governor) got recalled for NOT BALANCING THE BUDGET, and Arnold has gotten a free ride all these years and has YET to balance the budget.

Now he's trying to convince us (not unlike Bush, BTW) that Indian gaming puts money into the economy and contributes to the tax base. Sure, dude. Whatever.

Does anyone know whether the high speed rail initiative passed?

In my opinion, we stole most of a continent, wiped out millions of innocent people, and pushed the remaining few into smaller and smaller "reservations." As if we should by some insane reason have the right to "reserve" a tiny piece of land for the people we stole it from. I think they should be able to keep the money from their gas stations, cigarettes, and casinos tax free, without the US watching over their shoulder. Especially considering once an Indian nation buys land, it becomes soverign land, and US law is secondary.

What you said hits the nail on the head.

Don't tribal laws on sovereign land supersede federal law by treaty? Why would Indian gaming benefit anyone other than the people belonging to the tribe?

Anything that the Indian casinos do shouldn't even be subject to a state vote. If they want to build casinos that go right up to the edge of the reservation, then that should be their right.

The thing is, there's Indian casinos being built in urban areas under some pretty shady circumstances. I'd like to see the breakdown of how those casinos are giving back to the communities they're in.

I'm pretty neutral about this, but I recognized it as a screwjob from the very beginning.

Shai: I try to be neutral, but I usually take a defensive stance from the beginning. My lady friend is 100% Native American. I've been to her families reservation, they are some of the poorest places I've ever seen. And on top of that, there is somewhat a history of natives being "taken advantage of." I can see how some corruption would make people pissed. On the other hand, If someone thinks that there isn't corruption within whatever state they happen to reside in, regardless of Indian casinos, they're very much mistaken.

That's the name of the game in politics.

There's some casinos that DO pay into their tribal fund, which takes care of a lot of people. But, as you said- does your GF's tribe have a gaming program? If so, it doesn't sound like it's being evenly distributed.

AS I said, it's a neutral issue for me. I think gambling is not a great thing to promote, but since the world is not a cut and dried/black and white place...I suppose allowances have to be made.

I still think it's going to make a few greedy people rich and leave a lot of poor folks who need the help out in the cold. The whole idea of the state having oversight over the revenue is simply to "keep honest people honest", in my opinion. Doing away with that benefits no one.

Well try looking at it this way.

At the very least it provides jobs.

I'm sure there's not enough qualified Indians to fully staff those casinos so they're gonna have to hire people.

True. The reservation I'm from up north got a casino/resort like 10 years ago.

Provides jobs and gives people a reason to actually come to the reservation that normally, nobody would even drive through.

And you don't really have to have qualifications to work at a casino..unless you're trying to be a manager.
