A while back, Gray Davis was Mayor of Oakland (dont know who is now), he tried to get together with like 20 Indians, and have them call themselves a tribe so he could open a casino. Didnt work.

I go to the casino out here with a Navajo friend, I have to take a seperate care. He stays there for 12 hours at a time if he can. It's a big problem in that community. It's funny though, he does Indian chants while he gambles.

the way i look at it, native-americans have gotten shit ever since 1492.

broken treaties, 'free land' for them to live in the shittiest of place where no crops could grow, forced into schools to deindianize 'em, small pox blankets etc.

not give them any help on their reservations as far as infrastructure.

kinda let them fend for themselves.

fast forward to now. they finally come up with a hustle.

now we (CA) want to tax them and have them ask for permission for shit like more slots.

fuck that let 'em be.

they only thing i dont like is the majority of casinos are non-union and have shitty wages.

i might have been okay with a deal to let them expand if they unionized.

then again like i said before, let them do what they want.

they shouldnt have to pay for arnolds poor budget.

also the other fucked up thing is the tribes are trying to vote out other members to get a fatter share of profits.

if they fuck up it's on them.

I think that putting this on the ballot gives the people the idea that some of the money is going to go into the tax base. The majority is earmarked for the tribal fund, which alleviates some of the burden put on the budget by shifting the cost elsewhere...but I doubt that this is going to put MORE money into the state fund. It will just free up resources, at best.

Which it doesn't, really. It just takes the onus of supporting the tribe off of the feds and makes it an Indian responsibility. The problem is, without some kind of offical oversight into the gaming proceeds, no one really knows what percentage is actually going to the tribe, and what is going to the house.

I agree the Indians have gotten a raw deal throughout history, and they certainly deserve every opportunity to be self-sufficent. I just doubt that the people who are running the casinos are going to be immune to making bad decisions when the chips start rolling in.

they way i look at it if the casinos' fuck up it should be on them, poor decisions, legal issues, firewater, etc.

i don't think the pale face gov. should get involved.

i dont really trust the casinos/tribes giving money to the people that deserve and need the money. but then again i wouldnt trust our government doing that either.

Yeah, it's a shitty situation. Gambling has ruined a lot of lives, no doubt about it.

I think it says a lot about the state that this country is in that we legalize gambling before we decriminalize pot.

As you said, it should be a tribal decision. Putting it on the ballot confuses the issue, and makes no sense to me.

http://www.menifee247.com/2007/12/california-proposition-94-95-96-97.htm

The Breakdown

What the Casinos get...

* Casinos no longer have to have an impartial auditor count the slot machine revenues; they'll be able to audit them on their own.

What the State gets...

* Casinos will now pay more money than before, almost double than under the current compact agreements. But as mentioned above, the Indian tribes will now get to audit their own revenues for the purpose of deciding how much money goes to the State. Under the current arrangement, an impartial auditor is used. So, it's not exactly clear how much more money California will receive.

LOL, I'd love to have my taxes doubled in return for making up my own annual earnings.

It's 2008 tho. Native americans got their land took, their culture took, their money took, and every fuckinng thing else. The worst part is their own children don't even give a fuck about their own heritage and decided to build casinoes, whorde the land, steal money from their own, and develop some of the most polarized communities of extreme wealth and extreme poverty in america.

This deal just makes the rich richer, and protects them from basic audits that every fucking man woman, child, business, and competing indian and non-indian casino have to deal with. Thats it. Politically correct fools can shut the fuck up.

nah bro, the worst part is the hundred's of thousands of native americans including unarmed women and children that would get slaughtered by US troops.

the losing their culture thing is a minor thing compared to the rest of their struggle. its just something that came along with the US govt's idea to 'educate the savage' and force them to adopt more 'civilized' ways, thus creating the pathway for losing/misplacing their culture.

pretty much we all have lost part of our culture as we assimilated into "Americans".

i mean irish-americans, italian americans etc. other than probably a few curse words in our grandfathers native tongue and a festival or two one could argue we've lost our culture as well.

anyways back to the topic.

how are the casinos hording land?

if it wasn't for the casinos in the first place their would be no money to steal or deprive from other tribe members. (i've been/passed some of these locations in the middle of nowhere where the soil was more rock than dirt. basically worthless.) so it's wack they do this but hey it does make them more american by doing so.

as for the polarization or rich vs. poor,

look at bill gates and look at the poorest of white's in middle america.

big difference there too.

basically like i said before let the tribes govern themselves.

they discover gold and we try to snatch their land back that we gave them.

they discover casino cash cows and we try to control their business.

i'm part native american, and i prefer that the land got taken and industrialized instead of the tipi buffalo version.

otherwise i wouldn't have my american idol shows and football and basketball seasons and all that jazz.

Man, are you on some sort of medication that makes all of your opinions backwards and stupid?
