having a problem with spyware on a shared computer.

i'm getting these popups as well as supposed "system messages" warning that "your computer is infected with spyware blah blah blah" and then when you click them it takes you to a page of some foreign company that sells a spyware removal tool.

i ran adaware twice and removed all the shit it found, but the popups are still coming up.

suggestions?

Disabling the Messenger Service

To prevent anyone on the Internet from generating pop-up messages on your computer, you can disable the Messenger service. You can restart the service easily at a later time if you decide to use it.

Windows XP Professional

  1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
  2. Click Administrative Tools
  3. Click Services
  4. Double-click Services
  5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
  6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
  7. Click the STOP button
  8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
  9. Click OK

Windows XP Home

  1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
  2. Click Performance and Maintenance
  3. Click Administrative Tools
  4. Double-click Services
  5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
  6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
  7. Click the STOP button
  8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
  9. Click OK

Windows 2000

  1. Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Services
  2. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
  3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
  4. Click the STOP button
  5. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
  6. Click OK

Windows NT

  1. Click Start-> Control Panel
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools
  3. Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger
  4. In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop
  5. Choose Disable as the Startup Type
  6. Click OK

ok i fixed it, i tried the stuff casek recommended, one was just a blocker thing, the other needed to download shit to install and for some reason couldn't connect to the server.

i eventually used 'hijack this' to get a list of running processes as well as registry entries, which enabled me after rebooting in safe mode to get rid of the thing causing the problem :mad:

it took entirely too long, but its fixed now.

on another note, seffiks, whats up with a link to the japanese ninja porn??!?!? :lol:

its possible that after reinstalling windows that the drivers for the USB hub/system haven't been installed properly.

sounds like a driver issue ( go to device manager and remove it) sounds to me like you installed it more than once and its causing conflicts so go to the device manager locate it and remove it including doubles if theres any plug it back in when the propmt comes up saying found new hardware cancel it and manually open device manager and scan for hardware changes and choose it that way

sef... ive done that like 10 times already........ its definitely not that............ i try to fix problems on my own for a while before i get fed up enough to bother you guys... so usually ive tried all the obvious stuff already....

it says "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" after it tries to install.....

im looking through a bunch of google results from that now but im not finding much.....

how do i always have the most retarded problems that ive never heard of before?

i think that means that the driver files (.exe or whatever) could be fucked. so try downloading or finding new drivers
