  1. that's amazing. if you told me those were photographs i'd believe it in a second.

  3. i was under the impression that all it would take to ruin a hard drive is for one little speck of dust to get inside it... as it would throw the arm off and break it, or something. if that's true, then i would imagine it would be very hard to open up the hard drive yourself without exposing it to any dust or other particles. i dunno, maybe i'm wrong. but anyway, it's actually my friend's father's hard drive that i was asking about. from what he tells me it just makes a single loud click when he turns the computer on, and it doesn't detect the drive at all. i assume from the clicking noise that it's a mechanical failure... but i'm not sure. what kind of prices are we talking about for data recovery? or is it possible to have it professionally repaired?
  4. is there any way to recover data from a hard drive that most likely has mechanical problems (i think the arm is broken) without going to a company that specializes in this and spending a lot of money? could i use data recovery software that's on a good hard drive to recover what's on the bad one?

  6. yeah, DyeStop's pic made me do a double-take. definitely awesome.
  7. weird... my brother's computer recently had the same thing happen to it. only it was a power outage that caused it. now every time he starts his computer, it starts to load up and then just restarts and repeats. i haven't gotten around to trying to fix it yet, but i was going to try the same thing casek suggested. if that didn't work i would just reinstall windows. you'd still have all your files, but any registered programs would have to be reinstalled.
  8. ProperKaps, you did that when you were 12? that's impressive...
  9. fire pants, i love that upside down shot of the old guy.... and the fridge full of Yuengling. i like pretty much all the shots in this thread... excellent stuff... i'm gonna start taking pictures soon.
  10. soulseek ... it's a peer-to-peer file sharing program.
  11. i don't trust FTP's. i was running one in college and almost got sued by the RIAA.
  12. i was just saying this in another thread today... i remember when i first got soulseek i thought it was the greatest thing in the world. i'd be able to find songs that no one i've ever talked to had ever heard of... yesterday i searched for some Gang Starr (something that should be plentiful) and the results were pathetic. also, i never knew there was a 12oz chatroom on it... i'll have to check that out and steal peoples' songs. i mean, what is the world coming to when you can't even get anything for free anymore? i mean, seriously... in a few years, i'm probably going to have to actually pay for software, games, movies and music. i don't want to live in a world like that.
  13. from the article: "It takes many gruesome failures to produce just a single clone." that makes me scared. i just picture a bunch of botched cloning attempts, producing deformed 'creatures' that need to be euthanized. speaking of euthanization... check out this article: http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Publ...04/616jszlg.asp
  14. thanks gnome... that dpreview site is great... i researched it and realized that it's definitely a good buy (the Sony DSC-W1)... so i bought it last night from newegg.com for $319.
  15. hey..... i'm looking to get a digital camera and was wondering if you guys could recommend one. i only have about $300 - $350 to spend (considering i will also need a memory card), but would like the best one possible for that price range. any suggestions as to where i should/shouldn't go to buy one? ideally, i would like a 5 Megapixel camera (although i'm probably going to have to settle for 4) with manual/automatic focusing and manual/automatic exposure control. i don't know enough about cameras and their prices to know whether or not this is feasible at all. all the cameras i see with these features are more like $500, but i figured there's gotta be some out there that aren't so expensive. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
  16. every day of my life i feel like Michael Douglas in "Falling Down"
