Milton
Your boy Milton has been looking for a good first motorcycle that I won't be too upset about if I crash for a while now and has narrowed it down to two choices. 1. 1986 Honda Shadow $1200 OBO http://digivex.com/jetski/vmax/86shadowvt500c.jpg'> Just like this one same year, color etc. 700 cc engine. 2. 1982 Honda Magna $800 http://home.comcast.net/~srlohman/cycling/82magna.jpg'> This one's a little faster, but a little older and has more miles. 12oz motorcycle heads, let me know what you think... jazzy maid
i am most definitely not a motorcycle head.. in fact i am very much afraid of them, besides that i'd say go for the cheaper one tho. All bikes are made to need mechanic attention to them after almost every ride, if you love to ride them you love to fix them. So why not save $400 for the tools for it or other shit. Weapon X
Those seem sort of expensive, considering the years they were made. I’m not a bike head like my friends. I’ve helped rebuild bikes, but I’m just not into them so much.

TresOne
If it's your first bike, i'd say go for a Kawasaki Ninja (GPX) 250. My best advice is to start small in terms of engine size, and work your way up. A 250 isn't going to have the gusto to push you up to those blistering speeds, but then again, if you're just learning to ride, this is a good thing. A 250 cc motor is perfect to learn on, and has more than enough power to move you when you're used to controlling the bike. Plus, a 250 is a smaller and lighter bike than say, a 600, and thus is easier to control, and you're less likely to drop it at slower speeds. http://goldwing.bikepics.com/kaw-gpx250-88-bikepics-42769.jpg'> http://goldwing.bikepics.com/kawasaki-gpx250-92-bikepics-096033.jpg'> The high 80s / low 90s 250 ninjas are perfect - good power, handling, size and weight, but durable and it's not the end of the world if you down 'em. Now, if you're persistant on having a more powerful engine, then go for a 600. Being your first bike, i wouldn't recommend anything over a 600 to start with, especially if you're looking at a sport bike. Again, the Ninjas or ZX-6s are good to start with, but i'm personally a fan of the early 90s Honda CBR 600s. Loads of power, easy to handle, and relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things. This is the bike i have now, and although it's nothing special, it gets the job done, and it's fun as all fucking hell to ride. 1991 Honda CBR 600, cost me just over $2gs (canadian) two years ago http://goldwing.bikepics.com/honda-cbr600-91-bikepics-077120.jpg'> But like i said, since it's your first bike, and you already have a price limit, go for a 250 Ninja if you can find one, you won't regret it. *EDIT: Oh yeah, don't be a fucking herb and skimp on the gear either. A good jacket, gloves and helmet are the things you should spend most of your budget on. I'd say take a safety course too, but it's not like learning to ride is hard at all. Just don't be a newfie and try to do wheelies or stoppies on your second ride.

And dont worry about learning to drive, its just like riding a bike, it just hurts more when it goes wrong! Somebody should start a motorbike thread! Guest krie
I belive that the Kawasaki Ninja doesnt have the label of GPX. A 250cc 'Kawasaki Ninja' is a ZX2. Photo: http://goldwing.bikepics.com/kaw-zx2r-97-b...epics-24273.jpg Try find something that has little mileage as possible for your dollar. Check if the bike has been previously dropped, look on the end of the handle bars to see for scratch's. Itll have a few on there if its been dropped. Also test ride both bikes to see which is more comfortable, you wont wanna be on the bike for more than 10 minutes if it is uncomfortable.
SteveAustin
yo milton...for a starter bike either one of those two are fine. I'd probably go cheaper just so you won't have a lot invested. I'm assuming you're planning on learning how to ride and then buy a nicer bike...say a year later? check out the Kawasaki 454 ltd. you should be able to find them cheap. they have enough power to keep you interested, but not get you killed. another one to check out is the yamaha maxim 550. I learned on one of these and loved it. forget about the 250 ninjas. those things are slow as shit, more expensive to fix if you drop (fairings), don't hold their value and you'll get made fun of...badly. save the nice bike and fairings for round two.
