A pedestrian was fatally hit by a replica taxi used for the Canadian version of game show “Cash Cab” in Vancouver late Friday night.
The 61-year-0ld man was struck by the vehicle in the city’s Downtown Eastside district as it was en route to a storage facility. A producer was driving it back after finishing a day of production, according to Andrew Burnstein, president of Castlewood Productions Inc., which produces the show.
The victim died shortly after at a hospital. His identity has not been released.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his friends and his family.” said Burnstein. “My heart also goes out to the driver of the vehicle, a member of our technical staff, who is shaken and devastated by this tragic accident, as is our entire team.”
The cause off the accident is still being determined and no charges have been filed so far, Vancouver Police Constable Lindsey Houghton told the Associated Press.
On “Cash Cab,” people enter what they think is a normal taxi cab but in reality is a game show. They then must answer trivia questions correctly in order to get to their destination, and receive cash prizes for their correct answers.
The “Cash Cab” concept orginated in Britain, and the U.S. version of the show has been broadcast on the Discovery Channel since 2005, filming in New York and Chicago. The Canadian version has been on Discovery Channel Canada since 2008.
