    Computer troubles.

    Specs:
    Hewlett-Packard Pavillion PC,
GenuineIntel Pentium III with 128mb RAM

    Problem:
Recently purchased a Cypress 80gig External
Harddrive from pcktekonline to find out your
computer has to be USB 2.0 Compatible. So
    I ordered an off-brand USB 2.0 2-slot Cardbus
and recieved it today. The cardbus installs fine
and the computer recognizes it, problem is as
soon as I plug the USB cable from the external
HD into the bus the computer freezes. If I even
plug the AC adapter into the bus, the computer
freezes. If I turn off the computer and plug
anything in.. Mystikal starts playing in my
head and babies cry. Same shit.

So what's the deal? Should I send back this
no-name shit and try to order name-brand?
Is there a simple solution? Am I exceeding
bandwidth? The fuck is going on?

Can anyone help or know of a forum where
I can ask and not have to wait 4 months to
    find one reply? Anything's appreciated.

i may be getting a new hard drive soon, so this should be fun.

is the usb thing SUPPOSED to be a usb 1.1-2.0 adapter ? one thing that could possibly work is a BIOS upgrade, maybe then your computer will be 2.0 compatible. here's a couple ideas:

    1. i believe there's a usb-serial port adapter you can buy.
    2. you could take the actual hard drive out of the plastic thing and install it inside your computer.

also, you could try contacting hp, pcktekonline, cypress, or the company that made the usb thing

Re: i may be getting a new hard drive soon, so this should be fun.

If by 'the usb thing' you mean the cardbus itself,
then yes. It plugs into the PCMCIA slot and
then you plug the external hard drive into that.

I'll try updating the BIOS tomorrow, that's a
good idea. This is my dad's older laptop that
he hasn't used in close to a year... so it may
be a little out of date.

I'll look into the serial port adapted too.. if
I can't get this to work I'll try to send back
the card and order one of those.

    And I'm on a laptop.. so I don't think I can
    actually install the drive itself.

    Once again, gracias.

Yeah, I was going to try that tomorrow also
if this place wasn't any help... seeing as though
    it's almost 1 in the morning I didn't think they'd
    be open.

The problem is that your computer needs more RAM. 128mb is simply not enough memory to be running USB2.0 devices, especially hard drives. What you should do is go spend the $20-50 and get at least 256 more mb of ram, install it, and then use your new HD.
