THE state's 600 RailCorp transit officers could lose their jobs but be given the chance to become fully fledged police officers under a major shake-up of transport security.

A proposal before cabinet reveals the government has a $38 million redundancy package plan in place for the transit officers, who were introduced in 2002.

It states the transit officers, who wear grey and are armed with batons while on patrol, are unable to compete with police officers when it comes to catching criminals on the public transport network.

Police, with their powers of arrest and weapons, would be more effective in patrolling to protect passengers using trains, buses, ferries and taxis, it said.

A centralised police transport command would be created by November, with the number of police devoted to transport security doubled from 300 to 600.

In addition, there would be almost 180 civilian "revenue protection officers" - 150 of them newly-created positions.
