With the exception of DUI (which is only a felony is some states) and random graff shits, felonys are serious shit. It's not like you stole a candybar and ooops there goes an F on your record. b) Cats that have committed the Big 3: Homicide, Rape and Robbery (violent robbery) show that they do not respect societies laws. Why then should we allow them the right to create societies laws. I'm pretty sure you don't want these people making decisions for you. c) Nobody is going to maginalize the common man. Although the frog in the pot argument works for a long time, people are smart enough that at some point they jump the fuck out. Look at the WTO riots. MILTON THROW AWAY THE KEY Quoted post Wow you're dumb. There's TONS of offenses that are felonys besides rape, robbery and murder. Know at least a little of what you're talking about before you run your mouth. Just cause someone has been to prison doesn't mean they fucking murdered or raped or even harmed anybody. This thread is about FELONS being able or not to vote.... not MURDERERS AND RAPISTS AND ROBBERS. And everyone including yourself IS margionalized. How the fuck are people supposed to "vote out" the politicians that would take away their freedoms after the very act of taking away their freedoms resulted in imprisonment and thus their inability to vote? Quoted post You're completely correct. I'm an idiot. And in fact, I made that two separate points because I think that all felonies are either murder rape and robbery. God, I'm really a fucking idiot. On the other hand. Maybe I meant that a) most felonies that people are convicted of are more serious than DUI (which is true) and b) perhaps people with the worst kind of felonies should not be able to vote for the reasons I proposed. Nah, that couldn't be it. I'm just an idiot. This shit is turning into General Hospital. Kids are lame. Sorry you got fingered on the inside while doing fed time for stealing internet porn. Wish I had more time to chat, but I have a paper on the continuing vitality of the provocation defense due in about 12 hours. MILTON KEEP SUCKING! Milton
I wouldn't say "soon." I'm about halfway there...
PushbuttonWarfare
If you do the crime, you should do the appropriate time, and then you should be folded back into society. People make mistakes and to continually punish them after they've already served their due punishment does not make any logical sense. Legislation that further alienates an individual only contributes to recidivism. Most felonies that people get convicted for are relatively minor drug offenses, which I'd say are less serious than DUI. I'd rather have little johnny fuckup have a felony brick of weed in his car than have him drunk behind that wheel while my wife is out driving. SF1
Exactly. Most felony convictions have to do with drug charges. I was gonna retract that "dumb" comment, but seriously, if you're halfway through law school and you still think that most the people in prison are there for murder or rape... there's something wrong with that picture. Quoted post Yep, Internet Diploma Status, for real. I recognize that most people in jail are not in there for rape, robbery or murder. For the third time, that is a class of felonies that I think could justify removal of voting rights permanently. Also, I recognize that most people in jail are in there for drug and property acquisition crimes. These crimes, in my humble opinion are more serious than DUI though less pervasive. Maybe it's a personal bias from socialization within my cultural group that teaches me that DUI isn't really a crime. Maybe its a puritanical remnant of times long past. I'm not debating the moral value of either DUI or drug posessions or murder and rape for that matter. All I'm saying is that in mainstream society's eyes Johnny Hustle on the corner slanging rock and carrying a 38 in his waist is a more serious offense than Mickey Midlife getting drunk at his local bar after work and driving his Taurus home to beat on his girlfriend. Finally, we don't need to debate academic credentials, the internet is a wonderful social equalizer. But believe you me, that is not a debate you want to start with me.
