You must take into account a few things.

Where are you riding? Hills or flat or a little of each.

Do you have a brake?

Do you ride alot?(leg strength, how's yours?)

If you are riding a road bike, what is your most comfortable gear?

All this is important for getting it right and saving your knees a

little "discomfort".

In my experience I used to ride a 48 - 19. All day in traffic in Boston.

A larger cog in the rear engages more chain and teeth for more

control and prolonged cog tooth life. In comparison to a 16 T or smaller.

48 - 16 is a steep gear if you have a 16 I would suggest starting at 42

and work your way up.

Fill out the questionaire and I can help further.

I'm in Brooklyn. Pretty flat, but the bridges to manhattan are steep.

I'm planning on putting a front brake on since it's already drilled for one.

Right now I'm riding 48 20 on sort of cruiser with an internal hub. (shimano nexus 4 speed)

I almost always stay in 3rd gear. Sometimes 4th. I can do the bridge in 3rd.

I looked at a gear calculator and ended up with 93 gear inches, which is really high. Someone who rides fixed told me that the 70s are where most people ride.

I would say that I don't ride that much compared to most people on here. Not full time at all.

I'm thinking about this Sugino crank (it fits the bottom bracket the frame came with) and the place that has them says the smallest front ring they have is 46. So maybe 46/16? 46/17? I hadn't really thought about the cog life thing. thanks for bringing it up.....I'm interested in what other people prefer.

You know whats REAL fun about track bikes... going 35 MPH at on comming traffic and living. The hospital hates me. All i broke was my crank. Someone up there is looking out for me.. probably the head supervisor of the hospital.

Im gonna cop a GT GTB soonenough 57 is the biggest they have but whatever.. thats the only thing my LBS has. Plus for 450. I might have to get a CUERVO because my LBS is a certified dealer.. their track bikes look quiet dandy too.

Hollaaaa.

D90 - riding bikes make me feel better.

Good reference on the nexus.

You seem to have it all worked

out. A lot of good input in here.

I side with the spin more argument.

It is helpful in lo-speed tight manuvering.

Very common in the urban landscape.

It also makes stronger legs. Win, win.

With a front brake you can go bigger but

the issue becomes knees. I mentioned

that earlier because it's easy to overgear

for your fitness level. You ride enough to

know what is comfortable so that should be

your guide to proper selection. It is always

good to spin though because as you move

up to heavier gears you are able to spin a

larger gear as fast as the lighter gear and

thus become, wicked fast. This is acheived

by increasing leg strength without stressing

the knees improperly. Which is important

because you want to be an old guy who rides

his classic 80's pista when all the other old

timers are pushing walkers at the 12oz nursing

home. Just like poor grandpa simpson!

Hope some of this is helpful too.

Originalarea:

It sounds like I am overgearing for my fitness level. Or am thinking about it. I rode around for a couple weeks in 4th gear a while ago, and then realized that even though I COULD do it, it wasn't very pleasant. 3rd seems nice and smooth. But the idea of more maneuverability in traffic makes a lot of sense to me. It's mellow where I am, but Manhattan is pretty hairy. Thanks again for the advice.

Yep. I haven't changed my number for way too long. Raven would be proud of me.

I have to ride early in the morning the 11th but I will probably come out to the race afterward. You racing on Friday and Saturday? Pops coming too?

Been riding a lot, as usual. Gym work has changed from lifting for strength to lifting for endurance. It's weird but I think I like it better.

Wowzers! That thing is hot biscuits! Single speed with disc brakes... where I live that's a bike made in heaven. Nothing like hitting the brakes in wet weather only to have them start working fifteen feet later. Disc brakes solves that shit instantly.

Nice bike Steve. What's the price tag on that little lobster tail?

Nice bike Steve. What's the price tag on that little lobster tail?

[/b]

$1150 for the steel custom frame, fork, chris kind headset and stem.

It has an eccentric bottom bracket and full cable holders...none of that exposed cable bs. He can run gears on it if he wants. It has a slight metallic flake in the paint job as well. One of my boys raced cat 1 for like 10 years. Dudes had many, many custom bikes and he said his rock lobster was by FAR the best one he's ever gotten. I'm thinking awfully hard about selling 2-3 bikes to build up a lobster. On the mountain side...29's are where its at.

edit:

oh yeah...homie has a titanium moots post and bars on that bike above as well.
